Brazilian Modern Coffee Table in Hardwood and Marble, Joaquim Tenreiro, 1950s

About the Item

Available today in NYC with free domestic shipping included, this Brazilian Modern Coffee Table made in Hardwood and Marble by Joaquim Tenreiro in the 50's is gorgeous. This coffee table has a wood structure made in Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda consisting of two oval legs connected by a wood beam at the center. The top is made of white marble. The wood has been refinished and is in excellent condition. The piece is displayed in the showroom next to two "Lobby" armchairs designed by Jorge Zalszupin in the 70s and the convo looks super cute. A piece like this will easily flex into any environment really, from mid-century to contemporary, modern or farmhouse. So if you are looking for a uniquely looking accent, look no further, this is it! About the designer: Joaquim Tenreiro was born in Portugal in 1906 but spent most of his life and career in Brazil, where he became one of the country's most celebrated furniture designers. He started his career as a cabinetmaker and set up his own furniture workshop in 1943. He quickly gained recognition for his innovative designs and his use of traditional Brazilian materials like cane and jacaranda wood. His work was heavily influenced by past furniture-making techniques and emphasized the importance of technical mastery, aesthetic experience, craftsmanship, and cultural context. He often used clean, simple lines and geometric shapes in his furniture designs, which were a departure from the ornate and heavily decorated pieces that were popular at the time. His work was also notable for its functionality and practicality, as he believed that furniture should be both beautiful and useful. Tenreiro retired from furniture design in the late 1960s to focus on painting and sculpture, but his legacy in furniture design lives on. He died in Itapira, Brazil in 1992 at the age of 86.

Available right now, this very Brazilian Modern armchair pair in hardwood and gray suede designed by Joaquim Tenreiro in the sixties is gorgeous! The model is called “Concha” (Shell in Portuguese). The armchairs feature a hardwood structure upholstered in gray velvet and four toothpick legs. The back (the “shell”) is curved and ends in the arm rests. What makes these armchairs so special is the beautiful design iconic from Joaquim Tenreiro (Publications attached also). The original upholstery was also suede so we decided to do something similar. The furniture set photo showcases the armchairs with the matching “Concha” sofa (sold separately) and a Jean Gillon Rodeio...
