Poul Kjaerholm PK91 Folding Stool E. Kold Christensen, 1961

About the Item

Iconic PK91 stool designed by Poul Kjaerholm and a first production manufactured by Ejvind Kold Christensen, Denmark 1961. This foldable stool has a matt chrome plated steel frame which is foldable due to an ingenious joint structure in the middle of the cross. The structure of the stool is slightly twisted so when it is in folded position, it fits perfectly against each other. This stool might seem simple but the way this is constructed is absolutely amazing. The design probably took a long time to perfection as the full weight of the person sitting on is rests solely on the canvas seat and the joint structure which keeps the frame together. It has to be incredibly strong and well thought to work as perfectly as it does. The frame is obviously made of solid steel which can take a lot, but still. The stool is in fully original condition with its original canvas seat which has a nice original patina from years of use. The matt chrome plated structure is also in very good condition with normal age-related wear. The stool is not stamped but many early productions weren’t. This was purchased together with other Kjaerholm pieces coming from the same house, all early E. Kold Christensen productions. A true collector’s item in fantastic original and well maintained shape.

The chairs have matt, chrome-plated spring steel feet in 3 pieces, connected with screws. The seats are made of moulded fiberglass, felt padding and cognac leather covering of the highest quality. This is for example one of the most difficult chairs to reupholster according to leather specialists, only a few people are capable of doing that in the right way. These examples of the famous PK 9...
