Chinese Petite Coffer Chest, c. 1850

About the Item

Perfectly proportioned for its petite size, this low elmwood chest is the ideal place to stow odds and ends. The charming cabinet has all the features of a traditional Chinese coffer - straight recessed legs, curving spandrels, and a floating-panel top that moves with the seasons. The small chest has a single shallow drawer secured with brass hardware. A layer of red-brown lacquer darkens the exterior, now beautifully faded with a smooth patina. From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
