Rare Otto Schulz Bar Cabinet in Walnut and Leather with Brass Nails

About the Item

Otto Schulz, bar cabinet, walnut veneer, leather, brass, glass, Sweden, circa 1940. This beautifully decorated bar piece was designed by Otto Schulz. It shows well-chosen proportions, with an open base and a well-sized bar unit placed on top. This bar is a good example of excellent woodworking by virtue of the skilfull carvings and the rhomboid surface outlined by brass studs, adding a wonderful rhythmic and haptic surface to the front. Functionality comes into play through the availability of great amount of storage space created by two drawers and multiple shelves within the interior. Notable detail are the mirrored veneer doors displaying identical wood grains, truly magnificent. A horizontally placed luminous bar enlightens the interior with its irregular pattern of golden paint in a fine manner. Otto Schulz (1882-1970) was a German designer and architect schooled at the Technical University in Berlin-Charlottenberg and the Architectural School in Berlin amongst others. The majority of his career was however spent in Sweden. He worked as a draftsman and interior designer for several years after his arrival in Sweden. In 1920, he founded Boet together with Adolf Nordic Borg, the head of Nordiska Kompaniet's design offices, a company that came to be a well-established interior design shop that also published a magazine under the same name. Schulz design was often so inventive, that he patented some of his techniques such as his characteristic decorative brass nail designs referred to as Bopoint. His design is known for its capability to blend traditional elements and techniques with a modern style.
