18th Century Baroque Secretary, Tabernacle, Walnut, Plum, Maple, Austria c. 1750

About the Item

Baroque tabernacle secretary with figural marquetry Austria Walnut, plum, maple Baroque around 1750 Dimensions: 192 x 133 x 75 cm Description: Magnificent and exceptionally beautifully designed tabernacle secretary from the Austrian Baroque. The three-bowl base stands on pressed ball feet. The front has several bends and is concavely curved towards the inside. The drawer fronts are veneered in diagonally running walnut in the outer section, the bandelwerk marquetry is in plum and bog oak. The middle section of the piece of furniture has two small drawers, one above the other, on the outside and a writing tablet in the middle that can be opened to the front. From the outside, the top is elaborately inlaid. A hiker is depicted in front of a rural backdrop, framed like a cartouche. The marquetry is exclusively made of maple, the individual pieces of veneer are fire-shaded, thus separating them from each other and giving the picture a certain "depth" and a three-dimensional character. If we open the writing flap, we find a spacious work surface with four small drawers behind it. The top of the writing cabinet consists of the central tabernacle door, which is surrounded by ten further drawers. The four drawers on the left and right, one above the other, are bent in the front and can be locked by means of a central lock. The tabernacle door is diagonally veneered in plum on the outside and here too we see a cartouche-like figural inlay of maple on a ground of dark wood. The sides of the piece of furniture are simply fielded. The fields are veneered in birch burl, as are parts of the drawer and door fronts. Condition: Restored to living room standard. Wonderful, absolutely authentic patina condition. The surface has been gently cleaned and polished with shellac. The drawers run perfectly and the locks work.
