Brazilian Nesting Tables and Stacking Tables

BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Giuseppe Scapinelli, Nesting Tables, 1960
By Giuseppe Scapinelli
Located in PARIS, FR
As usual, Scapinelli distinguishes himself with these nesting tables "gigogne" by the elegance of the lines and the finesse of the realization. Made of solid wood (probably Pau marfim, one of his favourite species), the light and graceful base combined with the glass of the tops gives the whole an airy aspect reinforced by the dynamism of the three pieces. Provenance: Private Collection - Brazil. Born in 1911 in Modena, Italy, Giuseppe Scapinelli is a versatile artist. An architect, painter, ceramist, sculptor and designer, he constantly reinvents himself in search of beauty, whatever the medium. In the post-war context, with his diploma in architecture obtained in 1941 and his immense imagination in his luggage, he organized his departure for Brazil in 1948. In 1950, he founded his own architectural firm in Sao Paulo, where he enjoyed success and rubbed shoulders with high society. A perfect Italian dandy, bon vivant...

Set of Three Contemporary Brass Mosaic Side Tables, Flow Collection
By Jonathan Amar
Located in Paris, FR
Set of three contemporary handcrafted guéridon side or end nesting tables composed of a solid brass structure and designed with two intricate mosaic tile tabletop zellige designs handmade with expert workmanship by Moroccan artisans. This set of three different heights allows for different layout possibilities. Flow collection 21st century Base type 1 Solid French polished brass Moroccan Zellige, patterns 1 and 2 Choice of blue, red, black Various brass finishes and heights are available upon request The tables here measure: 2x 36 cm in diameter 1 x 40 cm in diameter The Flow collection is an ode to movement designed by Jonathan Amar composed of artisanal articulating lamps and side tables following three years of research and development between his office in Paris and his atelier in Rabat. It represents 35 years of passion and know-how in the fields of decorative arts and interior design. Practicality Built with sophisticated joints, extendable arms, and lampshades with adjustable stems. Equipped with the latest LED sensory dimming or wireless technologies. Available in a variety of sizes to cover all types of living areas. Craftsmanship Handcrafted in France and Morocco with French and Italian materials, Flow honors the relationship between meticulous workmanship and quality materials through the thickness, finishes and fixtures of each creation. Due to the handmade nature each piece is unique and might vary slightly in finish. Materials Brass, the central element of each creation, is available in an array of finishes: nickel-plated, polished, varnished or aged. The finish you select and the way you care for your Flow throughout the years results in one of a kind pieces. Since brass is a metal which works well with a multitude of materials, Jonathan Amar associates it with a unique palette of colors and textures. Fabric and wicker are used to design lampshades; Zellige and marbles form table tops and bases; lamp stems are sheathed in hand pleated leather by artisan saddlers. Hand-engravings, the iconic know-how of our atelier, are available on a selected number of models as an additional request. About Jonathan Amar Born in Rabat in 1955 and raised in France from an early age, Jonathan Amar is one of the first designers to export artisanal Moroccan know-how abroad. His eclectic bringing up, from both shores of the Mediterranean, the teaching he acquired during his travels around the world, make him without a doubt one of the most unusual designers-creators of his generation. He is behind the New Age and Ethno-Chic Baroque movements or the art of blending the world's cultures, creating places where exceptional decoration is an essential element. Indeed, he has the talent of merging various elements - even disparate - and integrating them into a new aesthetic set. His style will give birth to a number of movements which will inspire many artists and decorators. This ability allows him to undertake all types of projects, appropriate various volumes and he quickly develops a flair for lighting arrangements, giving each of his projects a strong identity. In 1985, at the age of 30, Hubert Boukobza entrusts him with the artistic direction of ”Les Bains Douches". It is a true institution of Parisian...
