CHINOISERIE STYLE

Emerging in the 17th century, chinoiserie appropriated the aesthetics and imagery of popular East Asian design for European-made versions. Reflecting the exoticization of China, Japan and other countries in this era, the word directly translates from French to “Chinese-esque,” which reveals its shortcomings as a style of furniture and decor that often stereotypically and reductively mimics Asian culture rather than showcasing and paying tribute to its artistic traditions.

The enthusiastically decorative chinoiserie style was propelled by influential tastemakers including French King Louis XIV, whose Trianon de Porcelaine in 1670 was inspired by Chinese architecture. Expanded trade between the East and West led to a demand for porcelain, lacquer objects, silk and other goods, which further informed the fanciful furniture being crafted in Europe.

Artisans working in the chinoiserie style used materials and elements like pagoda shapes, bamboo, lacquer surfaces, bird and flower motifs and other interpretations of Asian design on pieces that were frequently set against vibrant wallcoverings. This whimsical approach yielded chinoiserie furniture that boasted dramatic flourishes drawing on the natural world and reflected the dominance of Rococo during the 18th century.

As chinoiserie was shaped by approximations of Asian design by European creators, it had regional variations, such as Chinese Chippendale in England where cabinets, chairs and tea tables had wooden fretwork designs and “japanned” surfaces intended to resemble lacquer work that was created in East Asia. In North America, furniture makers in Boston and New York integrated chinoiserie-painted scenes into Queen Anne furniture.

Antique chinoiserie furniture has continued to be fashionable, from its popularity with decorators of the Hollywood Regency era — James Mont, Tommi Parzinger, William Haines and Samuel Marx favored the style — to contemporary interior designers, although it brings with it a complex history.

Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Late 20th Century. Exquisite!!! That’s only one way to define this fabulous vintage coffee table Attributed to Robert Marcius for and by Casa Bique Ltd. Casa Bique’s items are purported to have been manufactured in the same factory as Maitland Smith, so you know it of the highest quality. Just look at the gorgeous curves on this beauty! Let’s start with the classic Ming style chow legs...stunning!! But then your eyes are immediately drawn to the fabulous intricate carved detail of leaves and vines all around the edges and down the legs of the coffee table. And the over-all finish is absolutely phenomenal!!! Details indicative of the high style designs produced by Casa Bique Ltd. It has a square frame and a lovely, beveled glass insert. This coffee table is exactly what you need to add a touch of chinoiserie or island flair to your home whether your style is mid-century modern, traditional, contemporary, or Asian. We know you have fallen in love with this incredible chinoiserie coffee table as much we have. What are you waiting for?? You need to make it your own! Robert Marcius was born in Greenville, Mississippi and he began designing and producing sculptures, jewelry, and objects d’art when he moved to New Hope, Pennsylvania in 1972. He formed a partnership with Gene Jonson, and they formed “Jonson and Marcius” and moved their business to Manhattan. During this time, he supplied Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel, and Bloomingdale's with jewelry and Karl Springer with accessories, furniture, and sculptures. After seeking out Jonson and Marcius in 1975, Lorin Marsh launched their business of an original and unique line of furniture and accessories. Cartier and Tiffany also featured items manufactured by Jonson and Marcius. During the 1980’s Marcius sold his partnership and moved his operations to North Carolina where he designed the product and direction for Casa Bique Ltd. until the early 90’s. For 4 decades he has developed and designed for such clients as Frederick Ramond, Garcia Imports, Casa Stradivari, Thomasville, Lane, Kinder- Harris, The Platt Collections, and many others. He continues to sculpt and paint via Marcius LLC. -LinkedIn. Casa Bique Ltd. had been an exclusive Thomasville-based importer and manufacturer for many years. Casa Bique ceased operations in early 2004 and has reestablished as “Classics by Casa Bisque...
