Chinoiserie Sofa Tables

Exceptional Nineteen-Laties (late 20th Century) Chinoiserie console table by Drexel. Winged tips flanking the ends and the brass medallion drawer pull are classic Chinese elements along with the uniform silhouette. In the West we call it a Parsons leg, truth be told, the Chinese did it first. Here we can see how Drexel understands the parallel between Asian and Modern aesthetics. The black lacquer surface is enlivened with painted scenes featuring figures interacting amongst a backdrop of nature and architecture. This piece is finished in the round. The back side has painted panels throughout. An ever-useful, inconspicuous, drawer can be found at center. This table comes with a sheet of glass to protect the decorative top. "An elegant Oriental chinoiserie console table by Hekman Furniture, circa 1980s. A rectangular Queen Anne form with walnut burl top over a black lacquer frieze with gold trim and cabriole legs.. Features two dovetailed drawers and oriental painted scenes. Hekman Furniture Co. 1922 - present Hekman’s first introduction was a line of 30 occasional tables. From there, the line grew to include occasional pieces for the living room, library, and hall. During World War II the factory was converted for production of glider bottoms and ammunition boxes. In 1960, pieces were offered in Neo-classical, Italian Provincial, French Provincial, and Danish Modern styles. Besides Sobota’s “English Yewwood Collection,” the company produced other wood occasional lines in the 1970s, including the English Provincial “Charing Cross” collection, the sleek-lined, Mapa burl-veneered “Wind Row” collection, a series of entertainment centers, and the faux bamboo “Bambu Regency” collection.
