Inkless Embossed Print Entitled "Intaglio Solo 5" by Josef Albers 1958

About the Item

Signed original inkless embossed print entitled "Intaglio Solo 5" by German artist Josef Albers, circa 1958. Excellent fresh impression on stiff cream wove paper, signed and dated ('58) in pencil (lower right); it is from an unnumbered edition of 25 impressions and was purchase from the William Weston Gallery in London, England in the early 1960s. The print has full margins and the sheet measures 7.125" x 10.25" while the image is 3" x 4.125". The piece is presented in a gold wood frame and measures 13.25" x 12.75" overall. In an interplay of space, perspective, form and technique, this inkless intaglio (gauffrage) by Josef Albers was created by etching lines of two different depths into a plate. Without ink, the furrows in the plate appear as raised surfaces when printed, the image enhanced by light playing across the page. As the viewer focuses on the different lines – thick and thin – we discover that Albers has presented us with an illustration of impossible perspective. The pictures do not do this piece justice; the impressed image is much clearer without the glare from the glass. My apologies. Fabulous and rare piece! #1750. Josef Albers (American, b. German, 1888-1976) Born in Bottrop, Germany, Josef Albers enrolled at the Bauhaus – the recently founded school of art, architecture, and design in Weimar, Germany – in 1920. Placing equal importance on technical and artistic skills, the courses at the Bauhaus centered on the “contrasting effects” of form, texture and – most importantly for Albers – color. After completing his studies, Albers taught at the Bauhaus for eight years until the school closed under pressure from the Nazi party. He then emigrated to the United States and taught at Black Mountain College, NC, and Yale University, CT. In 1949, Albers began his celebrated series, “Homage to the Square” which would become a body of more than 1,000 works executed over a period of twenty-five years. Albers published his influenced treatise “Interaction of Color” in 1963, which is still widely used in art instruction. Considered one of the most influential art teachers of the 20th century, Albers’ works have been the subject of numerous retrospectives at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and the Centre Pompidou, Paris. In 1976, the Josef Albers Foundation was established and, in 1983, a museum dedicated to the artist opened in Bottrop, German.
