19th-C. English Rococo Revival Majolica Ruth & Wheat Wall Plaque or Bread Tray
About the Item
A scarce and unusual antique English Majolica harvest themed, Rococo Revival style bread tray, circa 1850-1880, maker unknown.
The central image is modeled on the Book of Ruth, from the Old Testament, chapter 2, verse 7, “Let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves.”
The raised rim border shows the stalks and seed heads of the wheat plant bound at intervals. The inner rim is glazed in a mottled tortoiseshell of cobalt blue and browns. A central medallion molded in high relief is encircled in a stylized cartouche and shows a bare foot Ruth in the field gathering the wheat sheaf.
Beautifully glazed with a high gloss, the mold work of the medallion is amazing. This large and heavy bread server is suitable for hanging.
