Shelley Harmony Ware Art Deco Wall Charger

About the Item

This large Shelley Harmony Ware wall charger is decorated with a fabulous Art Deco sunburst design-the pattern being 8823A, the A standing for Amber colourway. The way it was decorated was that the powdered colours were mixed with turpentine and then applied. The piece was then spun on a wheel with the centripetal force spreading the glaze. The distance achieved depended on the consistency of the glazes, and the dispersion could also be stopped by the decorators breathing on the glaze. While I would hesitate to use the word unique, each piece would be different, and with the glazes flowing over the ribbed body further interest is added to the piece. Harmony ware was very popular when it was released in the early 1930's and fitted nicely into the Art Deco movement. This wall plaque is in very good condition and would date from around 1940-2. It measures 360 mm (14.25 inches) in diameter.

One of the most spectacular high style Art Deco pieces we have ever offered, this large wall charger depicting two female nudes and a deer in an idyllic, color-drenched garden was made in 1927 by the famed Sevres porcelain manufactory in France. The designer was Jean Beaumont, who is known for designing some of the most ambitious and striking of Sevres' Art Deco vases and other pieces in the 1920s and 30s, and the ceramic artist who applied the glazes was Adrien-Auguste Leduc, who worked at Sèvres from 1923 until 1948. Made only two years after the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes was held in Paris, which gave the Art Deco style its name many years later, the theme of this charger -- and its stylized, elongated nudes...
