Hand Painted Wall Charger by Gien

About the Item

This very colourful hand painted pottery wall charger, or plaque by Gien of France is decorated with a central faux armorial flanked by mythical creatures, above which are a merman and a mermaid. The outer edge is decorated with a continuous run of leaves in autumnal colours with the rim finished in black. It measures 310 mm (12.25 inches) in diameter and stands 25 mm (1 inch) high. The footrim is pierced to enable it to be hung on a wall. The condition is very good overall, but it does have some crazing and two small marks on the rim from the final firing. C1895.
