"Eroica, " Rare Print with Nude Male and Beethoven Reference, World War I Era

About the Item

One of a series of extraordinary prints by Arthur Paunzen, a prominent artist in early 20th century Austria, this example presents a sensuous, dramatic scene to symbolize the first movement of Beethoven's great Third (Eroica) Symphony. The most prominent feature is a lean, tall nude man, facing away from the viewer, holding a battle trumpet to his lips. In the background, a long line of nude men riding horseback crosses a distant ridge line. Paunzen makes masterful use of strong black and gray shades, with huge piles of clouds in the sky and a strong wedge of jet black foreground setting off the nude figure. The print is signed and dated "1918," and is framed under glass. (Dimensions include matte and frame; visible area is 12.5" high by 9.75" wide.)
