Maxime Lalanne "Rade de Bordeaux" original etching C. 1868

This is a mid 19th century etching entitled "Rade de Bordeaux, Janvier" (Port Of Bordeaux In Winter), Maxime Lalanne in London in 1868. The etching depicts many boats in the busy harbor of Bordeaux, including small sailboats, as well as tall ships. Another harbor is seen in the distance across the river on the left. Snow covered buildings are on the left and extending long distances in the distant background. Many people occupy the road and ground centrally and on the left along with some horses or mules attached to carts. The sky is a wintery gray.
It is signed in the plate in the lower left, the title and date are in the center and Bordeaux and the year are included in script along the top of a wall in the lower left of the engraving. This etching is held by many museums and institutions, including The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
François Antoine Maxime Lalanne (1827-1886) was a leading French etcher and painter of landscapes and urban views, who was at the forefront of the French revival of etching during the 1860's. He grew up in Bordeaux, but he refined his artistic skills and worked in Paris. His art was first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1852 and he continued to regularly show both etchings and paintings there until the mid 1880's. He was also the author of several important books on the subjects of etching and other graphic arts. He was a founding member of the Societe des Aquafortistes, along with Auguste Delatre, Cadart, Ribot and Bracquemond. Lalanne created over one hundred and fifty fine etchings. Lalanne's unique style of art influenced many French and English artists in the twentieth century.
Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894) was a British artist, art critic and author. He was particularly focussed on contemporary graphic art and printmaking techniques. He frequently wrote about the theory of the English Etching Revival, contributing to the establishment of etching as an original and major art medium. He was the editor of The Portfolio (1870-1893), a major arts publication dealing extensively with the art of etching. His most influential book was "Etching and Etchers", which detailed the creative and technical aspects of etching and engraving. The first edition was published in 1868 and included original etchings by Jongkind, Haden and Palmer, as well later states of 17th century Dutch masters. He published a second edition in 1876 without any original etchings. A third edition was published in 1880 in a large paper edition, limited to one thousand copies, which included twenty original etchings from contemporary artists Whistler, Haden, Palmer, Israels, Jacque, Jacquemart, Lalanne, Appian, Legros, Herkomer. including this original Lalanne etching...

A mid 20th century lithograph print by Vietnamese / French artist Hoi Lebadang (1921 - 2015) signed and numbered. The colors employed, shades of red, white and charcoal set against a golden yellow, signify warmth and richness. The abstract composition beckons further inspection. The techniques used for creating this work of art include an embossed area of the work where the paper surface is raised in an abstract design. This work is presented in its original frame. I knew nothing of the artist when I bought this work, I simply knew that it appealed to me. A quick search online revealed this fascinating biography on the artist that I hope you'll read and enjoy. This comes from the Outside Folk Gallery website, "War shaped the life of Lebadang (Lê Bá Đảng.) Sometimes called Hoi Lebadang, this painter’s experiences in colonial-era Vietnam and WWII-era France flow into his work. Working at the turning point between 19th-century bohemianism and 20th-century modernism, he existed in two worlds simultaneously. The path that brought Lebadang to France in 1939 and secured his place in art history is complex. Looking at his childhood, you would never guess that this young Vietnamese boy would have such an impact on the art world. After shortening his name in 1950 to Lebadang, he only used Hoi when making lithographs. In colonial-era Vietnam, the French ruled Vietnam from the 1880s until 1954; France beckoned like a beacon for art and culture. "Rose et Noir" is a group of three framed triptychs (a total of nine lithographic images); displaying a commentary on social drinking with a recurring theme of cocktail shakers; the set illustrates the terrifying effects of American cocktails on a newly married couple. It also includes a booklet by Rene Benjamin entitled, "Dialogue Moderne en Trois Temps et Trois Cocktails" and portfolio cover, published by Parisian wine merchant Etablissements Nicolas Dessins (France). #3102
Each image is 11.5" x 9.5" and marked "Paul Iribe" in the lower right. The framed size of each triptych is 18.25" x 38.5"; with the total size of the piece displayed on the wall is 38.5"W x 54.75"H. The works are beautifully presented and matted in silk moire and black wood frames. The piece is in very good vintage condition.
PAUL IRIBE
Paul Iribe (1883–1935) was born in Angoulême, France. He started his career in illustration and design as a newspaper typographer and magazine illustrator at numerous Parisian journals and daily papers, including Le temps and Le rire. In 1906 Iribe collaborated with a number of avant-garde artists to create the satirical journal Le témoin, and his illustrations in this journal attracted the attention of the fashion designer Paul Poiret. Poiret commissioned Iribe to illustrate his first major dress collection in a 1908 portfolio entitled Les robes de Paul Poiret racontées par Paul Iribe. This limited edition publication (250 copies) was innovative in its use of vivid fauvist colors and the simplified lines and flattened planes of Japanese prints. To create the plates, Iribe utilized a hand-coloring process called pochoir, in which bronze or zinc stencils are used to build up layers of color gradually. This publication, and others that followed, anticipated a revival of the fashion plate in a modernist style to reflect a newer, more streamlined fashionable silhouette. In 1911 the couturier Jeanne Paquin also hired Iribe, along with the illustrators Georges Lepape and Georges Barbier, to create a similar portfolio of her designs, entitled L'Eventail et la fourrure chez Paquin.
Throughout the 1910s Iribe became further involved in fashion and added design for theater, interiors, and jewelry to his repertoire. He continued to illustrate fashion, opened a store of decorative art on the rue du Faubourg St.-Honoré in Paris, and created textiles for the firm Bianchini Ferier and for designer André Groult. His association with the theater resulted in several publications related to the renowned dancer Vaslav Nijinsky, including the album Prélude à l'aprés-midi d'un faune, which captured Nijinsky's choreography for the Claude Debussy composition in photography by Adolph de Meyer...

Jean-Michel Folon’s (Belgium 1934 - 2005) enigmatic landscapes and mysterious humanoid forms helped revolutionize conceptual approaches to illustration in the late 20th century. While Folon has worked across multiple disciplines—including painting, textile, sculpture, stained glass, and printmaking—he is perhaps best known for his drawings and watercolors depicting landscapes in the vein of Surrealist masters such as Salvador Dalí and René Magritte. These works depicted idyllic forests and prison-like skyscrapers populated by butterfly or bird/human hybrids he called “Everymen.” Folon’s drawings were published in such publications as Esquire, The New Yorker, and Time, among others, and he illustrated a number of well-known books.
