Antique 'En Tremblant' Diamond Large Butterfly Brooch, c. 1850.

About the Item

'En Tremblant' Diamond Butterfly Brooch, circa 1850. 18K yellow gold and topped with silver, which was the custom of the time period, this large brooch is impressive and one of the nicest we have seen of this genre. 2.5 inches wide and 1-1/8th inches vertically the a total weight of 14.8 grams. This antique butterfly has 3 large old cut diamonds set in his body, the largest being 1.75 cts., then .70 cts., and .60 cts. The total diamond weight in the larger diamonds estimated to be therefore 3.15 cts. There are 64 smaller diamonds, graduating slightly in size, and finally 4 rose cut diamonds. These smaller diamonds are estimated to weigh 1.45 cts. Therefore there is an estimated 4.5 cts. of diamonds. The diamonds are estimated to be I-K in color and slightly included. The eyes of the butterfly are two small vivid red natural rubies. 'En Tremblant' in French means to tremble. To accomplish this, the brooch as been set with a spring in the back, so that the butterfly flutters as the wearer moves. Our model is a medium to large size, as is the hand model. All items sold are accompanied by a detailed Statement of Value by our gemologist, as well as all original gemological documentation, if specified in the listing.
