Victorian 18 Karat Gold Multistone Pendant of Historic Interest

About the Item

This delightfully complex pendant holds a plethora of noteworthy details. Crafted in 18 karat yellow gold, it boasts a melon cut banded agate center with sharply polished edges, the dome leading up to a discreet diamond set star. The motif is framed with what appears to be tiny coral beads, but, upon inspection, is actually tiny applications of brilliant clear orange enamel on an ivory enamel base in each section. To further pique the collector's interest, the jewel is of historic significance: the engraved words at the back reading "Romaine from her uncle C" refers specifically to the marriage of Romaine Madeleine Goddard ( c 1847-1926) to Baron Gustav von Overbeck of Austria (4 March 1831-8 April 1894), with President Ulysses S Grant, his wife Julia, and Chief Justice Salmon P Chase in attendance, and was quite the social event. The jewel is an excellent example of Victorian jewelry at its finest, and is presented in its own fitted box. Chain measures 15", pendant measures 3 1/2" high and 1 1/8" across. We particularly love the inscription on the back from an uncle to his beloved niece, wishing all good things to his young relative through the gift of this unique jewel.
