Ancient Greek 5th Century BC Medusa Coin 18K Gold Ring
About the Item
An authentic silver "drachm" coin from the ancient Greek colony of Apollonia Pontika (now in Northern Turkey) from 450-400 BC is set in a complementary Steven Battelle "heart spirals" bezeled handmade 18K ring design. The coin features the face of Medusa with her protruding tongue and crown of snakes. Medusa was the only mortal among the Gorgon sisters, and was also distinguished from them by the fact that she alone was born with a beautiful face. Ovid especially praises the glory of her hair, “most wonderful of all her charms.” The great sea god Poseidon seems to have shared this admiration, for once he couldn’t resist the temptation, and impregnated Medusa in a temple of Athena. Athena was enraged, and transformed Medusa’s enchanting hair into a coil of serpents. Henceforth Medusa's gaze would cause a viewer to be turned to stone. She was slain by the Greek hero, Perseus. Apollonia Pontika (on the coast of the Black Sea) was founded by Greek colonists from Miletus in the 7th century B.C. The anchor on the reverse of the coinage is evidence of the importance of its maritime trade. This ring is sent with a laminated coin certificate of authenticity. It is currently sized 6.5. - easily re-sizable.
