"Market Tents" Modern Abstract Pastel Toned Cubist Style Street Scene
By Romeo Tabuena
Located in Houston, TX
Modern abstract pastel toned street scene by Philippine-born artist Romeo Tabuena. The work features a street scene with shadow figures browsing under a white tarp. Signed and dated in the front upper left corner. Currently hung in a grey toned frame. Dimensions Without Frame: H 19.75 in. x W 31.75 in. Artist Biography: Romeo Tabuena is a Philippine-born painter rooted in Eastern sensibility. He has been a resident of Mexico for more than four decades. Born in Lloilo in 1921, he studied architecture at the Mapua Institute of Technology and a fine arts course, majoring in painting, at the University of the Philippines. He also studied at the Art Students League in New York and at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. Tabuena decided to settle in Mexico and to make it the base of his painting career. But he has maintained links with his native country through participation in its major art projects, and despite his long residence in Mexico, he has retained his Philippine citizenship. One of his major works since 1957 is a government-commissioned mural, Filipiniana, at the Philippine Embassy in Washington D.C. His other exhibits include a ten-year retrospective show in 1959 at the Philippine Art Gallery in Manila. In 1962, his successful one-man show, which was sponsored by the Philippine Government at the International Salon of the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City, "further elevated the status of Philippine painting...

“Circumventing the Sun” Contemporary Abstract Metallic Gold Gestural Painting
Located in Houston, TX
Contemporary abstract painting by Houston-based artist Virgil Grotfeldt. The work features metallic gold-toned gestural strokes created with acrylic paint and bronze powder. Signed, titled, and dated on the reverse. Currently unframed, but options are available. Artist Biography: Virgil Grotfeldt was born in 1948 in Decatur, Illinois, and studied at Eastern Illinois University and the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. After a brief stay in Chicago, he settled in Houston in 1977, where emerging galleries and alternative spaces such as Diverse Works and the University of Houston Lawndale Annex were fostering a vibrant new art scene. His last teaching position was at Houston Baptist University. Although Grotfeldt frequently collaborated with the Dutch artist (and former student of Joseph Beuys) Waldo Bien beginning in the late 1980s, and remained close to the artist community in Houston, he maintained a deeply personal sensibility. Preferring a monochromatic palette of earth tones, which contributed to his work’s sense of timelessness, Grotfeldt emphasized texture as an expressive device. He experimented with materials, working with coal powder, clay, ground metal, acrylic, and metal dust on paper, which he combined with carbon, watercolor, or oil. He incorporated found letters, antique maps, and nautical charts to initiate a dialogue between conscious systems of order and the expressive freedom of the subconscious. One of Virgil Grotfeldt’s last bodies of work, a series of sixteen oil paintings completed during the final year of his illness, was based on MRI scans of his brain. With utmost clarity, these works document Grotfeldt’s key ambition to make sense of the many forces life entails its contradictions, inflictions, and puzzles. By making the MRI scans his material of choice, he abstracted the records documenting the failing health of his body. But by painting on them as a point of departure, he was able to create something vivid and vibrant, a home for the imagination built by an undeterred spirit. Grotfeldt had numerous national and international solo exhibitions. His work is part of the Menil Collection, Houston; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Chengdu Museum, China; and the Fritz Becht Collection, Amsterdam. In 2003, a major publication of his work, entitled Virgil Grotfeldt, with text by Patrick Healy, an introduction by Walter Hopps...

BESAME (KISS ME) Oil on Canvas Realism Cuban Art Emerging Artist Framed
By Cristian Mesa Velazquez
Located in Houston, TX
BESAME-KISS ME is a new painting from the studio of Cuban artist Cristian Mesa Velazquez. Kiss Me is an oil painting done in the Realist Style of contemporary painting which is oil on canvas. Cristian Mesa Velazquez is known for his figurative and portrait paintings done in the realist style. Cristian studied in several of the best art schools in Cuba and now lives in Barcelona, Spain. Cristian Mesa has won several art prices from several countries around the world including Luxemburg, Spain and Cuba. Born in Cuba, Mesa proposes an art that is reminiscent of the great masters of drawing, due to the cleanliness of his line that combines with highly contrasting tones. On February 18th 2013, the set of five buildings that make up the National School of Arts (ENA) and the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) was declared National Monument. The architects Ricardo Porro, Roberto Gottardi and Vittorio Garatti received in Italy the Vittorio de Sica Architecture Award 2012, in recognition of this majestic work. According to UNESCO, this compound is listed as one of the most important Cuban architectural structures and disseminated internationally. It is considered as a unique and representative monument of an unprecedented historical moment. It fulfills a social and practical function, and also has a high cultural and ideological value, being one of the most outstanding examples of the Modernist Movement in Cuba. Emergence of a sui generis place STATEMENT: The National School of Art arises from the need to create a system for arts education in Cuba and achieve its expansion throughout the country. Treasuring our cultural traditions, and conceived as a multidisciplinary center, it gathered the best examples of art in all its manifestations to create the first faculty. For the first time in history, an art school received students from all social classes and regions, making it majority´s right. The selection is based only on the ability and talent of the candidates, which are subject, prior to admission, to very rigorous and grueling tests. In the first academic courses, students had to overcome two levels of education (elementary and middle), but in 1976 it was created the ISA for university education of their students. Expansion of education at the National School of Arts The National School of Arts began teaching four specialties: ballet, music, drama and visual arts. Later modern...
