John Gould war ein englischer Ornithologe und Vogelkünstler. Er veröffentlichte mehrere Monografien über Vögel, die er mit Hilfe seiner Frau Elizabeth Gould und anderer Künstler wie Edward Lear, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf und William Matthew Hart anfertigte. Gould gilt als Vater der Vogelforschung in Australien, und die Gould-Liga in Australien ist nach ihm benannt. Seine Identifizierung der Vögel, die heute den Spitznamen Darwins Finken tragen, spielte eine Rolle bei der Begründung von Darwins Theorie der Evolution durch natürliche Selektion. Auf Goulds Arbeit wird in Charles Darwins Buch On the Origin of Species verwiesen.
