This artwork titled "Les Petit Rats, Ballerinas II" c.1980 is an original color lithograph on Japan paper by noted Bolivian artist Graciela Rodo Boulanger, b.1935. It is hand signed and numbered XLII/C in pencil by the artist. The image size is 22.5 x 18 inches, framed size is 36 x 30.75 inches. Custom framed in a wooden gold leaf frame, with off white matting and gold color spacer. Der Spiegel ist in ausgezeichnetem Zustand. About the artist: Born in La Paz, Bolivia in 1935, Graciela Rodo Boulanger was raised in an artistic environment. Her mother, a concert pianist, and her father, a businessman and art connoisseur, nurtured her talents. She studied the piano and at age 11 enrolled in the School of Fine Arts. At 17 she went to Vienna to study both art and music, and at 22 shetravelled to Argentina for the stimulating artistic environment of Buenos Aires. Continuing to study both piano and painting, she gave art exhibitions as well as concerts. It had been her desire to pursue both, however the two careers were so demanding that a choice had to be made. Boulanger decided to devote herself to her creative expression through painting. While in Buenos Aires she had two of the most significant meetings of her life. She met Claude Boulanger, the French diplomat whom she would later marry, and saw her first etching by Johnny Friedlaender, considered to be one of the finest engravers in the world. As a result, she studied with Friedlaender at his Paris studio from 1961 until 1968. Her work has gained international fame and success and since her first one-woman show in Vienna in 1953, she has worked in many other mediums including etching, lithography, watercolor, pastel, and sculpture. In 1979 UNICEF designated her as their official artist for her “Year of the Child” poster. Also, two of her tapestries were presented in the public hall of the U.N. General Assembly. The Museum of Modern Art of Latin America in Washington DC gave her a retrospective show of her oeuvre in 1983. In 1986, the Metropolitan Opera of New York commissioned her to do the poster for their production of Mozart’s “Magic Flute,” and a show of her paintings with opera and ballet themes was held by the art gallery of Lincoln Center. Boston Mayor Raymond Flynn honored. Graciela Boulanger by declaring October 16, 1987th as “Graciela Rodo Boulanger Day”, USA. In 1993, the World Federation of the United Nations chose to use one of her oil paintings, “Viaje Imaginario,” to illustrate a stamp issue and accompanying limited-edition print with the theme of endangered species. Her works are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America, Washington D.C.; the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris; the Museum of Modern Art in La Paz; and the Modern Art Center in Zurich, to name a few. Graciela Rodo Boulanger wurde 1935 in La Paz, Bolivien, geboren. Von klein auf war sie von Kunst und Musik umgeben, auch weil ihre Mutter Konzertpianistin und ihr Vater Kunstkenner war. Im Alter von 17 Jahren hatte sie sowohl in Chile als auch in Wien studiert und hatte Gemälde ausgestellt und Klavierabende in mehr als fünf Ländern gegeben. Mit 22 Jahren traf sie die schwierige Entscheidung, ihr Musikstudium abzubrechen, um ihre ganze Zeit und Energie der Malerei und der Herstellung von zu widmen.

1960 hatte Boulanger eine Ausstellung in Argentinien, wo sie zu den Gewinnern des ersten lateinamerikanischen Xylografie-Wettbewerbs gehörte. (Die Xylografie ist eine Form des Holzschnitts.) Nachdem sie eine Radierung von Johnny Friedlaender gesehen hatte, zog sie 1961 nach Paris, wo sie bei dem renommierten Künstler studierte. In dieser Zeit konnte sie ihren Stil und ihre Technik verbessern und erlangte weltweite Anerkennung für ihre Ölgemälde, Radierungen und Lithographien.

1966 stellte Boulanger zum ersten Mal in den Vereinigten Staaten aus und begann, Editionen ihrer Stiche zu veröffentlichen. Innerhalb von zwei Jahren gründete sie ihr eigenes Radierstudio.

1979 wurde Boulanger von der UNICEF zum offiziellen Künstler des Plakats für das "Internationale Jahr des Kindes" ernannt. Die Metropolitan Opera of New York gab Boulangers Plakat für ihre Aufführung von Mozarts Die Zauberflöte im Jahr 1986 in Auftrag. Der Weltverband der Vereinten Nationen wählte 1993 eines von Boulangers Gemälden aus, um es auf einer Briefmarke und als Druck in limitierter Auflage zu verwenden. Der Erlös kam der Erhaltung bedrohter Arten zugute.

Im Jahr 2005 verließ Boulanger Paris und zog zurück in ihre Heimat La Paz, Bolivien, wo ihre Tochter Sandra und ihre Enkelkinder eine ständige Inspirationsquelle für ihre Kunst sind.

Heute sind Boulangers Werke, die weltweit für ihre stilisierte Behandlung des Dauerthemas Kinder bekannt sind, in Museen wie La Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, dem Modern Art Center in Zürich und dem Museum für moderne Kunst Lateinamerikas zu sehen. Boulanger hat an mehr als 150 Ausstellungen auf allen fünf Kontinenten teilgenommen.
