This striking set of three finely coloured antique prints captures the vibrant and varied costumes and trades of 19th-century France, offering a glimpse into both urban and rural life. Published in 1835 by J. Dowding, London, these prints are from the remarkable volume “Illustrations of the Manners and Costumes of France, Switzerland and Italy” by R. Bridgens. The first print portrays a “French Pilot Conducting the Packet to the Harbour”, showing the pilot in a red cap and long blue coat, gesturing towards the sea, accompanied by a companion resting by a coil of rope.
