Joseph Martinek
1915-1989
Joseph Martinek (Jr.) was born December 2, 1915 in Cleveland, Ohio to a well-known Cleveland family. His father, Joseph Martinek Sr., a multi-lingual Czechoslovakian who emigrated to the US in 1909 and became a naturalized citizen, was a prominent newspaper editor, labor organizer, author, poet and gymnastics instructor. Martinek Sr. was dedicated to socialism and to Czech nationalism and served as Secretary of the Chechoslovak National Council of America.
Joseph Martinek (Jr.), sculptor, studied at the Cleveland School of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and The State Industrial School of Art in Prague (1934-1939). As a 24-year old student, Joseph Martinek was in Prague in 1939 and witnessed Hitler’s troop appropriating the land of his forefathers. He left six weeks after the Nazis moved in; and returned to the United States where he served in the 202nd Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft) unit of the Illinois National Guard in the US Army during World War II.
By 1940 the Martinek family had relocated from Cleveland to Chicago, Illinois where they lived for a few years until relocating once again, to Tucson, AZ. During their Chicago years, Martinek's sculptures were exhibited at the Chicago Art Institute and he was awarded the Robert Rice Jenkins Memorial Prize in 1945.
In 1948, Martinek married and by 1952 he and his wife and their first child had moved to Los Angeles where they would spend the rest of their lives and
would raise seven children. He began studies at the Otis Art Institute (the city's first independent professional school of art, established in 1918) in 1953 under the GI Bill. And in 1954 he won a scholarship which allowed him to complete the Otis' newly-established rigorous fourth-year program, under Millard Sheets. He was judged the only student ready to embark upon it. And his ceramic polar bear was exhibited at LACMA. He later became a professor of sculpture at Otis for more than 20 years. He also taught at and exhibited at Rustic Canyon and Barnsdall Park.
In an interview with internationally exhibited sculptor, Sharon Loper (1941-2022), a former student of Martinek's, she said: "As a student at Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, I was fortunate to have great teachers. One of my professors, Joe Martinek, taught that by learning anatomical and geometrical principles, I would build a foundation from which to grow. Professor Martinek (second generation apprentice to Auguste Rodin) also said, 'develop your own voice and never copy another artist past or present'.”
