So much about Munich’s electric cabaret scene and power of artistic collaboration during the Weimar Republic is captured in this poster image. For 20 German Marks, one could purchase a ticket for the Thursday, 7:30pm performance on November 18, 1919 organized by Robert Tants from one of two local music publishers, Alfred Schmid Nachfolger or Otto Halbreiter, for a raucous dance performance featuring Peter Pathe and other dancers who would be accompanied by a Big Band at the Hotel Four Season’s Concert hall. This was a one-night only event. Schnackenberg’s printer, Oscar Consee (1875-1919) produced the advertisement poster. Schnackenberg’s artistic images emphasize the body’s form as it is revealed by the interplay of dance and its related movement in costume. His posters were an extension of his close collaboration with cabarets who featured dancers as well as his own costume design which often inspired the choreography for a performance. In fact, Schnackenberg even created a poster to advertise Consee’s poster printing business. He also created at least two previous posters featuring dancing duo Peter Pathe and Maria Hagan. Here, the poster reinforces the costume’s significance, an outfit typical of one sex worn by a person of the opposite sex, by introducing an equally ambiguous signature. In this case, the area on the mid-right where the artist’s signature is typically located, reads instead: “M. Pathe” in block letters. M. is cryptic. It is transformational. With one letter, one move, Peter Pathe is in character to delight the adoring Munich public.
