Created and exhibited in the lead-up to the 2024 election, I envisioned a chorus of queer liberation, honoring the ancestors and the queer descendants of the future, holding a love song of strength and care for the world. In my earliest New York City years, I participated in Queer Nation and ACT UP meetings and actions as many of my friends were dying of AIDS complications; being of service, caring for others and community, anchored my development as a person. Today, I’m an active member of Gays Against Guns, a nonviolent direct action group trying to stop the epidemic of gun violence. My contemporary fiber art intersects fashion, sculpture, street art and queer activism through innovative use of textile collage and text-based art techniques. I begin with textiles selected for elaborate patterns, then reassembled into textile collages overworked with labor-intensive machine and hand-stitching, beadwork to create wearable art and two-dimensional works, sculptural pieces and installation. This piece also utilizes gifted remnants from Gilbert Baker’s Pride Flag workshop integrated into my own Queer fiber art activism The sculptural garments and wearable art pieces from my #urbanfey series are created as interventions of healing and activism amidst the challenging times in which we are living right now, offering reminders of the fragility of our world, and provoking a call to healing, to action, to remembrance.
