Designer, artista e architetto Eileen Gray è stata una delle figure creative più affascinanti del XX secolo. Il suo lavoro comprende pezzi laccati e lucenti - la sua sedia Dragons ha stabilito un record d'asta per i mobili moderni (28 milioni di dollari) alla vendita del 2009 della tenuta di Yves Saint Laurent - e arredi cromati ed eleganti che rivaleggiano con i lavori di Le Corbusier e dei membri del Bauhaus come esemplari di puro design modernista.
Figlia indipendente e anticonformista di un'aristocrazia irlandese, Gray studiò pittura alla Slade School of Fine Art di Londra intorno ai vent'anni prima di trasferirsi a Parigi nel 1906 per inseguire i suoi sogni artistici. Gray era rimasta affascinata dalla lacca dopo aver visto una mostra al Victoria and Albert Museum , e a Parigi convinse un maestro giapponese espatriato di questo processo minuzioso, Seizo Sugawara, a insegnarle. Nel giro di pochi anni, Gray è diventata famosa tra i conoscitori per i suoi arredi scultorei laccati, che ha incorporato nelle case dei clienti di interior design.
Gray era in continua evoluzione come designer. All'inizio degli anni '20 creava opere geometriche che incarnavano l'essenza di Art Deco e del nascente movimento di design modernista. Alcuni pezzi - come il suo paravento Bricks, un assemblaggio di pannelli rettangolari girevoli - utilizzano le forme planari preferite da Gerrit Rietveld e da altri architetti di De Stijl dei Paesi Bassi. Altri presentano le cornici tubolari cromate utilizzate da Marcel Breuer e Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Tra questi, la sedia Bibendum - chiamata così per la somiglianza dello schienale semicircolare e del bracciolo con il personaggio noto in inglese come Michelin Man - e il tavolino regolabile E 1027, concepito nel 1927 per gli interni di una villa bianca e spoglia che lei stessa progettò nel sud della Francia.
Non essendo mai stato un auto-promotore, Gray si allontanò dalle luci della ribalta negli anni Trenta. L'interesse per il suo lavoro si ravvivò però all'inizio degli anni '70, quando le proprietà dei suoi primi clienti vennero messe all'asta. I suoi pezzi originali in lacca sono i più ambiti ma, come dimostra la vendita della sedia Dragons, sono rari ed estremamente costosi.
Nessuno dei disegni di Gray fu realizzato in grandi quantità fino a quando, pochi anni prima della sua morte, concesse una licenza di produzione. Il prezzo di questi pezzi varia da 1.000 a 2.500 dollari, a seconda del tipo e delle condizioni del mobile. Il lavoro di Gray è diventato icona del design modernista pratico ed elegante.
