Jules Chéret
"La Belle Epoque", Original Jules Chèret oil on board painting, 13x9 in., Figure

1910's

About the Item

Jules Cheret (May 31, 1836 - September 23, 1932) was a French painter and lithographer who became a master of poster art. Often called the father of the modern poster. This piece is unique because it is an original oil painting by Jules Chèret. In this impressionistic piece, a red-headed French lady with a black bonnet and a fancy yellow dress is walking and dancing through a field. She has her hand sitting on her chest as if she is surprised. The dress has beautiful red and yellow flowers going down the right sleeve. As the father of color lithography and of the art poster, Jules Cheret's innovations have influenced everyone from Toulouse-Lautrec, who called him "The Master," to modern advertisers. His work transcended the realm of "commercial" art, however, and his paintings and pastels were eagerly acquired by influential collectors, as well as fellow artists like Degas and Monet. Cheret's pioneering efforts in color printmaking were an important contribution to the excitement and energy associated with La Belle Époque.
