Pène du Bois descended from French immigrants who settled in Louisiana in 1738 and was raised in a Creole household. He was born in 1884 in Brooklyn, NY and first studied with William Merritt Chase at the New York School of Art and later continued his training with Robert Henri. Pène du Bois was greatly impressed with Henri's credo that "real life" was subject matter for art and throughout his life a realist philosophy informed his art as well as his parallel career, art criticism. In 1905, Pène du Bois made his first visit to Paris where he painted scenes of fashionable people in cafes rendered in the dark tonalities and impasto associated with the Ashcan School. By 1920, he had achieved his mature style, which was characterized by stylized, rounded, almost sculptural figures painted with invisible brushstrokes. The subjects of his paintings were often members of society whom he gently satirized.
In 1924, Pène du Bois and his wife, Floy, left for France where they would remain until 1930. Returning to America showcases pictures the artist produced after this very productive period abroad. After five years of living in France, Pène du Bois was able to observe American life with fresh eyes. His work becomes more psychologically intense and less satirical. In Girl at Table a slender, blond is shown gazing at a small statue that she holds at arm's distance. The meaning is elusive, but a powerful sense of longing is evoked. Similarly, paintings such as Dramatic Moment and Jane are taut with unresolved dialogue. Both pictures depict mysterious interiors in which a lone woman anxiously awaits the denouement of a suspenseful scene. Other pictures, for example, Chess Tables, Washington Square and Bar, New Orleans, recall Pene du Bois's Ashcan origins in their depiction of urban entertainment.

Richard Whadcock is a contemporary artist specialising in atmospheric landscape paintings. His contemporary landscape paintings explore the South Downs and East Sussex coast. Trying to capture its ever changing dramatic atmosphere from silent stillness to squally days. The South Downs are only a starting point as the paintings themselves eventually take over and follow their own path creating their unique surface landscape. Richard studied at Fine Art at Bristol Polytechnic from 1986-89 where the work crossed between painting and printmaking. He then went onto study for his MA at the Royal College of Art specialising in printmaking. He utilised etching but mainly lithography due to its closeness to painting. Along side these he would also paint with all these disciplines feeding each other and expanding ideas. After leaving college Richard was awarded a residency at the Lowick House Print Workshop in Cumbria and more recently, 2014, he was also awarded a two week residency at Cill Rialaig artists village in Kerry, Ireland. His studio has been part of the Phoenix Arts studios in Brighton for the last 15yrs. It is one of the largest artist lead organisations remaining. Amanda Watt was born in Northern Ireland in 1960. Moving around a lot as a child between towns and countryside, drawing remained the one constant in her life. She graduated with a BA Hons from the Belfast College of Art and Design in 1982, and immediately left for the bustling London art scene. After three years, she was given an opportunity by one of her collectors to move to Los Angeles, where she spent the next twenty years building a successful career as an artist.
Amanda’s work was well-known on the California art scene, with annual exhibitions spanning over ten years at Timothy Yarger Fine art in Beverley Hills, as well as Bowles/Sorokko Galleries in San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles. Artist, teacher and costume designer, Sanzo Wada worked during a turbulent time in avant-garde Japanese art and cinema. A multi-talented artist who gained early fame as a Western-style oil painter, his career spanned the late Meiji-era through the mid-twentieth century. In addition to numerous prizes and medals for his painting, he received the 1955 Academy Award for costume design for his work in the movie Gates of Hell. He also received awards for his pioneering work on color theory, which he researched and published in the 1920s and is still in use today.
Sanzo Wada graduated from the Western-style painting division of Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Studied in Europe 1907-1915; traveled to India and Burma. He was appointed a member of the Imperial Arts Academy in 1927 and taught at Tokyo School of Fine Arts from 1927.

Style :
Pradosh’s works can be described as psychic automatism in its pure state. His works are expressive and his palette vibrant and gorgeous. Nature is the frequent imagery that we see in his paintings. Sometimes his imagery is outlandish, perplexing and uncanny as it is meant to shake the viewer and make them to think beyond the theories which they have guarded themselves with.
Lot of elements that we see in pradosh’s paintings also come from his childhood days in Odisha. like the cock, kite or the bioscope. As a young boy also he used to enjoy nature study and it became his daily routine to go and sit amongst trees and birds and observe them very closely, which made him gain mastery over water colour medium.
Pradosh’s paintings have a surrealistic quality, the imagery is dreamy and mystical and rendering is such as if there is some kind of romance and magic happening amongst the colours in his palette. His paintings are the result of brilliant culminations of feelings and things that are between imagination and reality. They reflect his genuine concern about issues he feels for. He emphasizes on the power of imagination and believes that revelation could be found anywhere….on the streets and in everyday life. Through his paintings artist depicts the notion that how our high pace life is making all of us loose that contact from the nature or even with ourselves.

An fine period watercolor, dated 1910, an illustration by Charles Edmund Brock (English, 1870-1938). This, from a semi-autobiographical novel written by William Makepeace Thackeray, "Pendennis", in full "The History of Pendennis: His Fortunes and Misfortunes, His Friends and His Greatest Enemy." The novel was published in monthly installments from 1848 to 1850 and published in book form in two volumes in 1849–50.
