Max Savy (French, 1918-2010) painted scenes of everyday life in the French Corbieres region, which garnered much success during his life. Though the artist remained silent about his early life, it's known his father instilled in him a belief in the humanist socialism philosophy of French Socialist Party leader, Jean Jaures. In 1938, at age 20, he moved to Carcassonne to attend school. There, he married and settled into a teaching position, joining the French Resistance during World War II and earning the Cross of the Combatant. After the war, he created the work for which he is most admired. Max Savy paintings are part of France's heritage collection, and the artist became a knight of the National Order of Merit in 1973. Max Savy's paintings and artworks include scenes of peasants in the fields. Max Savy was active/lived in France. Max Savy is known for folk art style painting of village architecture, vintners, figures in landscape, wine makers, marine scenes. His work is similar in style to the naive, folk art paintings of Michel Delacroix and Fanch Ledan. This refined painting, of considerable size and great scenic effect, is a derivation of Raphael Sanzio's famous fresco depicting Mount Parnassus, datable to 1510-1511 and located in the Stanza della Segnatura, one of the four Vatican Rooms. The meaning of the subject was to celebrate humanistic culture, a sort of allegorical representation that saw both the figures of myth and those of the greatest authors of the past side by side in the same space. The scene, enveloped in a lyrical atmosphere, is set on Mount Parnassus, near the fountain Castalia, for Greek mythology the home of the Muses, where ancient and modern poets are depicted. The painting, which rather faithfully reproduces Raphael's piece with perfect harmony and great pictorial quality, is the work of an Italian author active between the 17th and 18th century. We can see the careful balancing of the light, which brings out its chromatic brilliance, and the accentuated sculptural relief that the author gave to the figures, as well as the very faithful rendering of the individual pictorial details of the figures. At the centre of the composition stands the main figure of the god Apollo, crowned with laurel and seated on a rocky boulder intent on playing the lyre from his arm, surrounded by the nine Muses...

A member of the second generation of Hudson River School painters, George Herbert McCord is known for his atmospheric landscape and marine paintings which capture a variety of locales and are executed in a variety of media—including oil, pastel, and watercolor. McCord was born in 1848 in New York City, where he lived and worked his entire life. After 1883, he kept an additional studio in Morristown, NJ. McCord traveled throughout North America, painting in the Berkshire, Adirondack and Laurentian mountain ranges, the Hudson River Valley, the Coast of New England, the Upper Mississippi, and Florida, which had become popular among Eastern vacationers. He was among a select group of artists commissioned by the Santa Fe Railroad to paint the Grand Canyon, and also participated in a special painting excursion to the Erie Canal. His travels in Europe were equally expansive, taking him to England, Scotland (having been commissioned by Andrew Carnegie to paint the scenery around his castle there), France, the Netherlands, and Italy. McCord was well-educated, having attended Claverack College amidst the Catskills in Claverack, NY, which provided instruction in classical, French, German, English, music, painting, military, commercial, telegraphic and agricultural studies. He also studied with the accomplished painter and inventor of Morse code, Samuel F.B. Morse, and with the Scottishborn landscape painter, James Fairman. McCord was active in numerous art clubs and institutions in New York, including the National Academy of Design, which elected him an Associate member in 1880, the American Watercolor Society, the Brooklyn Art...
