Minerva Treadwell
Rare California or Western Mining Town Oil Painting by Listed Artist M Treadwell

1905

About the Item

This rare and unusual landscape painting shows a broad view of a mining town and its setting in the Western United States, most likely California or Arizona. It is signed by listed California artist Minerva Treadwell and dated 1905. Minerva Treadwell was born in 1864 and spent most of her life around Los Angeles and Santa Monica. Her father, George A. Treadwell (1837-1911) was a prosperous, well known and respected professor of engineering and mining, writing many papers on the subject, traveling and lecturing and later, owning mines in the southwestern US. At one time he owned the largest copper mine in the world. Minerva had a studio in Santa Monica and included with the images for this painting are actual views of her studio in the exact year that she painted this painting. (These historic photos are courtesy of U.C. Berkeley’s Bancroft Library collection) The painting depicts an arid mountainous landscape with a somewhat fertile stream valley and the beginning of a mining settlement. A railroad runs through the town and a train is shown. Treadwell’s attention to detail is lovely in her rendering of the settlement’s buildings and landscape. In the short distance appears to perhaps be the mine complex itself, painted red. This historic scene is unique and surely a rare view of Southern California or Western Arizona. The work is oil on canvas, 12” x 24” and has been recently professionally cleaned and repaired (one patch to back). It has a wide period gilt frame with overall measurements 18” x 30”. The frame is in nice condition with some expected, but minor, wear in places. This charming painting would be a fine addition to any Western or California art collection. The historic mining and railroad subject matter adds greatly to its significance. It’s a landscape from 120 years ago that certainly cannot be replicated.
