Oil Paintings

Throughout this piece Pylant explores the concept of impossible spaces, by creating urban scenes that blend into nature, creating portals within the artwork. The juxtaposition of urban and natural gives the artwork a surreal sense that immerses the viewer with a comforting sense of familiarity. By incorporating scenes of the present with imagery from past memories, Pylant develops a dialogue between past and future, creating a compelling and striking image that completely absorbs the viewer in its serene beauty. Moreover, the artist often combines imagery from her travels to Italy, Spain and throughout Europe with memories of her childhood home in North Carolina. The apartment was tiny, as hotel rooms tend to be, and clad with paper-thin walls allowing sound to pass from one apartment to the other. At the time, John’s artwork consisted of pounding copper sheets into tables which was a noisy endeavor to say the least. Following several noise complaints from the neighbors, John had a dream that he was living in a ramshackle house but with plenty of room to work and no attached neighbors. The following day after lunching at the McDonalds in Lincoln Park, John wandered the neighborhood a came upon a shabby, falling-down old Victorian house. He located the real estate agent, put in an offer, and weeks later was pushing a shopping cart full of his belongings to his new home. This 144-year-old Painted Lady provided a blank canvas for this inimitable artist. My subjects are at first glance close to home-new mothers, friends, lovers, artists, dancers-but are then quickly placed at a distance via edgy modification, rigorous technique, minimal contexts and composition, and idiosyncratic use of color. I am also interested in social presentation, artifice, and simulation as they relate to my subjects. I hope to peel away a gossamer thin layer of reality, not just to document the real but also to reveal what might be. BIOGRAPHY Given my restless history, it is curious that I became a figurative painter in New York City. My maternal Grandparents fled Hitler's Germany in the late 1930's.
