Post-Impressionist Paintings
POSTIMPRESSIONIST STYLE
In the revolutionary wake of Impressionism, artists like Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin advanced the style further while firmly rejecting its limitations. Although the artists now associated with Postimpressionist art did not work as part of a group, they collectively employed an approach to expressing moments in time that was even more abstract than that of the Impressionists, and they shared an interest in moving away from naturalistic depictions to more subjective uses of vivid colors and light in their paintings.
The eighth and final Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris in 1886, and Postimpressionism — also spelled Post-Impressionism — is usually dated between then and 1905. The term “Postimpressionism” was coined by British curator and art critic Roger Fry in 1910 at the “Manet and the Postimpressionists” exhibition in London that connected their practices to the pioneering modernist art of Édouard Manet. Many Postimpressionist artists — most of whom lived in France — utilized thickly applied, vibrant pigments that emphasized the brushstrokes on the canvas.
The Postimpressionist movement’s iconic works of art include van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889) and Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884). Seurat’s approach reflected the experimental spirit of Postimpressionism, as he used Pointillist dots of color that were mixed by the eye of the viewer rather than the hand of the artist. Van Gogh, meanwhile, often based his paintings on observation, yet instilled them with an emotional and personal perspective in which colors and forms did not mirror reality. Alongside Mary Cassatt, Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Gauguin, the Dutch painter was a pupil of Camille Pissarro, the groundbreaking Impressionist artist who boldly organized the first independent painting exhibitions in late-19th-century Paris.
The boundary-expanding work of the Postimpressionist painters, which focused on real-life subject matter and featured a prioritization of geometric forms, would inspire the Nabis, German Expressionism, Cubism and other modern art movements to continue to explore abstraction and challenge expectations for art.

Ignacio Gil Sala, was a painter, bohemian character, adventurous and intrepid traveler who knew how to capture his eyes to that world with his painting. After starting his artistic training at the age of nine, Gil Sala entered the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he had as teachers Felix Mestres and Vicente Borrás. Already in 1930, being still almost an apprentice, he obtained the bronze medal of the School, and in 1936 he won by contest a scholarship to make a study trip through Spain. Those were the difficult moments of the outbreak of the Civil War and thanks to the help of the sculptor Mariano Benlliure, he was able to complete his artistic training. Throughout his life Ignacio Gil dedicated himself to travel both in the Peninsula and in different Islamic and Latin American countries. Étienne Morillon, born in 1884, was a student of the Ecole des Beaux Arts of Lyon. In 1905 Morillon moved to Paris, where he met Miquel Utrillo. In Paris, Morillion’s style was heavily influence by Cubism and art deco, particularly by artist such as Paul Cézanne and André Derain. Many of Morillon’s works are currently exhibited in Lyon’s Museum of Fine Art.

Painter born in Bordeaux, in 1889 and died in Paris in 1962.
He began painting his mother's portraits very soon.
He studied at the National Superior School of Fine Arts. The artist considered his teacher and inspiring Degas.
Between 1904 and 1907 he joined Fauvism. In 1905 he participated in the "Autumn Hall" and in the "Hall of Independents". In 1907 he presented his 1st individual exhibition at the Vollard Gallery. He specialized in female portraits of Parisian ladies, creating a unique, sophisticated and elegant female portrait prototype that characterized him forever.
He played an essential role in the evolution of women's fashion of his time. He designed numerous dresses, hats and accessories for famous designers such as Paul Poiret and Henry Marque
It goes down in history as the architect of a new type of woman, thin, with an elegant air, always with style, with unusual elongated necks, with impressive slanted eyes, that seem to look at the world in amazement, perhaps because they express a feeling of freedom towards Society and its norms. With these paintings of women, he showed the world the true French, elegant, beautiful and with a gooseneck.
In 1914 he won the Rome Prize.
