About the Item
Alex Prager’s photographs are staged, theatrical and cinematic. They are inspired by classic Hollywood cinema and experimental films; popular culture; and a mix of fashion and street photography. Prager taps into a shared cultural memory to create images that are familiar yet strange. The characters, clothing, hairstyles and poses are all carefully chosen by the artist to convey a range of time periods from mid-century to present. The ambiguity of the time period is further complicated by the fact that the scenario could be happening in today’s world. This conveys a sense of timelessness and nostalgia while also creating a world that borders between fiction and reality.
This is Alex’s first “non human” Crowd scene. Unlike her human subjects which can take verbal direction quite well, the cats were unpredictable and improvisational. The influence of Hollywood that runs through much of Alex’s artistic inquiry is referenced here by the red carpet, suggesting the performative or theatrical element to the work. This photo was originally shot as a commercial spread for Vogue Magazine and included a model. By removing the model, the viewer is left without specific narrative content as to why the cats are lying about on this red carpet leaving it open for viewer interpretation.

Alex Prager
Influenced by pulp fiction and cinematic tropes, self-taught photographer and film-maker Alex Prager creates striking, sometimes unnerving images that are filled with a dynamic cast of characters. The hyperreal worlds she creates are packed with human melodrama, like the retro 'damsel in distress' character that regularly makes appearances in Prager's brightly colored and dramatically lit scenes. With influences ranging from David Lynch, Alfred Hitchcock, William Eggleston, Cindy Sherman, and Gregory Crewdson, Prager references the vivid aesthetics of mid-twentieth century American cinema and photography. Pairing photographs alongside her films as part of her practice, Prager presents an eerie, alternative world where more questions are asked than answered.
