Alan Shields Alice in Grayland, 1979 Mixed media collage: Etching, aquatint, screen print with stitching and collage on hand made paper Hand signed, dated, titled and numbered 1/13 by Alan Shields on the front Unique variant This very unique and imaginative mixed media paper collage with stitching and fabric is floated and framed in a museum quality white wood frame with UV plexiglass. It is hand signed, dated, titled and numbered from the limited edition of 13 - but each is a unique variant. Frame included: Measurements: Frame: 27.75 x 22.5 x 2 inches Artwork: 23.5 x 18 inches Catalogue Raisonne: K. Tyler Tyler Graphics: Catalogue Raisonné, 1974-1985, New York: Abbeville Press, 1987. p. 289. Alan Shields came of age artistically in the late 1960s in New York. Expanding the boundaries of Minimalism, he became known as a master of aesthetic invention through his wide-ranging exploration of materials and techniques. His mixed media works often contain combinations of traditional silkscreen processes combined with found materials. New York Times critic Roberta Smith wrote in her 2005 obituary for the artist: "Mr. Shields's work combined expanses of gorgeous stained color, reminiscent of Helen Frankenthaler's canvases, with the humbler crafts and a Gypsy sense of portability." Critic Robert Hughes has described Shields as a brilliant bricoleur who could, and often did, make art out of just about anything. He became an innovative printmaker, experimenting with handmade paper and turning out editions in which each print was unique. After his passing, Shields was awarded a Judith Rothschild Foundation grant given to recently deceased abstract artists whose work is of the highest quality but merits further recognition. About Alan Shields: Alan Shields (b. 1944, Herington, KS; d. 2005, Shelter Island, NY) created unique, imaginative, and theatrical structures using unconventional materials and vibrant color. His three-dimensional paintings convey a playful, deconstructive impulse through the incorporation of un-stretched hand-dyed canvas, rope, yarn, beads, and wood. Shields moved to New York City in 1968, where he showed with Paula Cooper...

Fabric-ation, signed monograph w/ hand made fabric covered boards 21/50 (unique)
Located in New York, NY
Yinka Shonibare Fabric-ation, 2013 Original Dutch wax print fabric chosen by the artist on Hardback cloth bound monograph with fabric covered board 12 1/2 × 11 × 1 1/2 inches Edition 21/50 (each entirely unique) Hand signed, dated and numbered 21/50 by Yinka Shonibare on the first front end page (see photo) Published by Yorkshire Sculpture Park, UK This gorgeous hand signed, numbered and dated monograph with hand made fabric covered boards was published on the occasion of the Yinka Shonibare MBE: Fabric - ation Exhibition at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Kunstforeingen Gl Strand in 2013. 160 pages Hand signed, numbered and dated by artist in on the first front end page. Beyond the exhibition plates, the catalogue also includes an interview with the artist by Hans Ulrich Obrist and texts by Dr Rebecca Schneider and Jean Fisher. The book measures 12.5" x 11", and is 160 pages. Shonibare produced this beautiful catalogue in an edition of only 50, and is sold out. Each work is totally unique, and has been cloth bound using a different original Dutch wax print fabric with embellishments that was chosen by the artist. It is also signed and numbered by Shonibare. Taking place in three of YSP’s indoor galleries and the open air, FABRIC–ATION featured over 30 vibrant works from the period 2002–2013 including sculpture, film, photography, painting and collage, with many works never before seen in the UK. This major exhibition was sponsored by Guaranty Trust Bank. Born in London in 1962, Shonibare moved to Nigeria when he was three, later returning to the UK to study art. His work shrewdly explores and confounds stereotypes of race and class, engaging with ideas around identity and authenticity as well as dislocation, multiculturalism, global food production and revolution, often addressed through playful conceits. This approach is part of his determination to avoid being categorised: Shonibare accepted an MBE in 2004, adopting the title into his working name, saying, “it was the last thing you would have expected of me”. More about Yinka Shonibare: Yinka Shonibare CBE RA was born in London in 1962 and moved to Lagos, Nigeria at the age of three. He returned to the UK to study Fine Art at Byam Shaw School of Art, London and Goldsmiths College, London, where he received his Master’s in Fine Art. Over the past decades, Shonibare has become well known for his exploration of colonialism and post-colonialism within the contemporary context of globalization. Working in painting, sculpture, photography, film and installation, Shonibare’s work examines race, class and the construction of cultural identity through a sharp political commentary of the tangled interrelationship between Africa and Europe and their respective economic and political histories. Shonibare uses wry citations of Western art history and literature to question the validity of contemporary cultural and national identities. In 2002, Shonibare was commissioned by Okwui Enwezor to create one of his most recognised installations, Gallantry and Criminal Conversation for Documenta XI. In 2004, he was nominated for the Turner Prize and was awarded the decoration of Member of the ‘Most Excellent Order of the British Empire’, or MBE. In 2019 Shonibare was made Commander of the same order, amending his professional name to include CBE. In 2008, his mid-career survey commenced at Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and toured to the Brooklyn Museum, New York and the Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington D.C. In 2010, his first public art commission Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle was displayed on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London. In 2013, Shonibare was elected as a Royal Academician and his most recent contributions have included: the RA Family Album, which was used to wrap Burlington Gardens building during construction and his two curated rooms which were part of the 2017 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, during which Wind Sculpture VI was also displayed in the RA courtyard. His recent major commission with the Public Art Fund, Wind Sculpture (SG) I, was installed at Doris C. Freedman Plaza, Central Park from March 7 through October 14, 2018. FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art presented The American Library at the Cleveland Public Library from July 14 until September 30, 2018. The British Library was recently acquired by the Tate London. In March 2021, Shonibare received Whitechapel Gallery’s prestigious Art Icon award, becoming the eighth artist to receive the honor. He was also selected to coordinate the Royal Academy of Arts 253rd Summer Exhibition in September 2021. Shonibare’s works are included in notable collections internationally, including the Tate Collection, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome; Pérez Art Museum Miami in Florida and VandenBroek Foundation, The Netherlands. -Courtesy of James Cohan Gallery

Alexander Liberman book, hand signed by both Alexander Liberman and Barbara Rose
Located in New York, NY
Alexander Liberman, hand signed and inscribed by both Alexander Liberman and Barbara Rose, and accompanied by a separate hand signed note, 1981 Hardback monograph (hand signed and inscribed by Alexander Liberman as well as art historian Barbara Rose), plus accompanied by a separate handwritten card signed by Liberman in the original envelope Warmly signed and inscribed on the monograph and card by Alexander Liberman and hand signed by Barbara Rose on the first front end page 13 1/4 × 12 1/4 × 1 3/4 inches A unique and memorable gift for any collector or fan of the sculptor Alexander Liberman! This lavishly illustrated hardback monograph with dust jacket is warmly signed and inscribed on the first front end page by both Alexander Liberman and the author, art historian, Barbara Rose, and it is accompanied by a separate handwritten card, signed by Alexander Liberman and held in the original envelope. (see photos). The book and card was inscribed to Jack Haber, the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Gentlemen's Quarterly (GQ) from 1969 to 1983. GQ was owned by Conde Nast, and Alexander Liberman, who worked for Conde Nast for 32 years, was the Editorial Director from 1962-1983. Sadly, Jack Haber would die in 1984 at the age of 45 - one of the first casualties of the AIDS crisis, which was devastating to the art and publishing industries. Inscription on the monograph reads: To Jack Haber with warm friendship Alexander Liberman Inscription on the card reads: Dear Jack [Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year] with warm friendship Alex Book information: Publisher: Abbeville Press, 1981. Hardcover. Bound in publisher's original white cloth with spine and front cover stamped in black. Full color illustrations throughout, including several color foldouts. 392 pages. About Alexander Liberman: Considered a revolutionary Minimalist artist, Alexander Liberman produced works that predated the movement by more than a decade. Liberman, not wanting to limit himself to any one form of expression, worked to produce radically minimalist paintings and sculpture in order to illuminate his beliefs about celestial motion, the movement of the eye, as well as human sexuality. The artist’s fascination with American industrialization and modernization ultimately resulted in his widely known red steel sculptures and geometric paintings, which seem to decompose the turbulence of the time period. Alexander Liberman was born in 1912 in Kiev, Russia. He studied first in London and then in Paris. He took courses in philosophy and mathematics at the Sorbonne and architecture at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Liberman has had numerous solo exhibitions at museums such as the Jewish Museum, New York (1966); Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, NY (1970); and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1970). His sculpture and paintings are included in the museum collections of the Art Institute, Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the Tate Gallery, London and many others. Additionally his public sculpture can be seen in over 40 cities around the world including Honolulu, Los Angeles, Miami, New Haven, New York, Oklahoma City and Philadelphia. Alexander Liberman died in November of 1999 at the age of 87. - Courtesy of Mitchell-Innes & Nass About Barbara Rose: Barbara Ellen Rose (June 11, 1936 – December 25, 2020) was an American art historian, art critic, curator and college professor. Rose's criticism focused on 20th-century American art, particularly minimalism and abstract expressionism, as well as Spanish art. "ABC Art...

Two Screenprinted pillow cases (one hand signed by Baldessari) in bespoke box
Located in New York, NY
John Baldessari Pillow Cases in Bespoke Presentation Box (one pillowcase hand signed by John Baldessari) for The Thing Quarterly Issue 22, 2014 Silkscreen on 100% cotton 320 thread count sateen pillowcases (Hand signed by John Baldessari) Boldly signed in ink by John Baldessari on one of the pillowcases (see photo) Unframed One of the pillowcases is hand signed in ink by John Baldessari: John Baldessari was one of the artists who were invited to contribute an object (or "thing") with text for a special project for "The Thing" publication (read on for more on "The Thing") ; the conceptual object therefore had to incorporate text. Baldessari's contribution in 2014 was a silkscreened pillowcase with text. A limited (unknown) number of these pillowcases were marketed and sold as a set of two in a bespoke box. However, exceptionally, Baldessari hand signed a very few of pillowcases in ink. This is one of the very special sets bearing one hand signed pillow case - purchased directly from "The Thing". (a copy of the 2014 receipt is shown here.) The rest of these boxed sets were not hand signed. The pillowcase is brand new, and will look gorgeous once pressed and framed by a professional framer. More about this boxed set: Issue 22 of THE THING Quarterly is by LA-based conceptual artist John Baldessari. It consists of two 100% cotton sateen pillowcases featuring an image of a woman clutching a pillow. The black and white image is taken from a Hollywood film still in Baldessari's collection and has been silkscreened on each pillowcase with environmentally-friendly, water-based ink. The pillowcases are standard-sized and envelope-style. For those who like their thread count high, the issue clocks in at a solid 320 thread count. Measurements: Box 10.5 inches by 13 inches by 2 inches Pillow 20 inches vertical by 26 inches What was The Thing Quarterly? THE THING was an experimental publication created in collaboration with Will Rogan as part of an artist residency. We saw it as a quarterly periodical in the form of an object. Each year, four artists, writers, musicians or filmmakers were invited to create an everyday object that somehow incorporates text. The object is reproduced and hand wrapped at wrapping parties and then mailed to the homes of the subscribers with the help of the United States Postal Service. It began as part of an artist residency in San Francisco’s Southern Exposure. Will and I had met in grad school at UC Berkeley and discovered our mutual affinity for quarterlies. He was a librarian at SFAI for five years and I had been a high school teacher for five years. WE were both interested pushing the boundaries of publication. Our plan was to create a 1 year publication with four artists, but from the very start the project generated so much interest and international excitement that we found ourselves running a publication complete with a brick and mortar storefront and a staff of four individuals. After 10 years, 34 issues, 59 projects and countless live events, we decided to end the publication in order to pursue our individual projects. We are still working together on a less ambitious new project, and hope to launch it at some point in 2021. CONTRIBUTORS: have included John Baldessari, Dave Eggers, Miranda July...

A Walk in the Tuileries Gardens Paris (screenprint with silver leaf and glazes)
Located in New York, NY
Peter Blake A Walk in the Tuileries Gardens, 2004 26 colour Screenprint with Silver leaf and 3 Glazes Hand signed and numbered 28/200 by artist on lower front 30 1/5 × 22 1/2 inches Unframed A Walk Through the Tuileries Gardens is based on a memory of a stroll in Paris distilled through the ephemera he found along the way. ' The legendary Peter Blake, the father of British Pop Art, is renowned for his love of gathering and collecting the ephemera of life, of memories, of dreams and whimsies, sometimes mingled with those of other historical fantasists. Possessions he regards as symbolic of his relationships with his world, carefully questioning the personal significance of each object in this respect. The scraps of tickets, fragments of plastic, driftwood, pebbles and sycamore leaf in A Walk Through the Tuileries gardens are evocative and ephemeral souvenirs, gathered at the time and collated later perhaps with a whiff of romance. His image takes us, in turn, on a stroll down the wide gravel, under the autumnal trees, a lingering taste of saucisson and red wine on our palate and with a sudden impulse to take a turn on the Caroussel. This whimsical Peter Blake print would make a great gift for any Blake fan. The work is matted and unframed as it had been removed from its original frame. Measurements: Board: 30 1/8 x 22 1/2 inches Sheet: 24 x 20 inches Legendary British Pop Art pioneer British Blake was born in 1932, and after his formal training at the Gravesend School of Art, then at the Royal Academy of Art, he broke away from tradition, producing work from 1960 on that would come to define the British Pop Art Movement. He came to be known as the Grandfather of Pop Art, and his art achieved iconic status with his sleeve for The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Blake’s art draws on imagery from the popular culture of the past and present, as well as from the canon of fine art, thus creating an alternative, more democratic visual aesthetic. He freely mixes the ‘high’ with the ‘low’, ultimately inviting us to see beyond such distinctions. Always playful, and at times irreverent, he sets up the most unlikely juxtapositions across time and space, creating conversations and ‘parties’ to which all are invited. An abiding theme is an investigation, and celebration, of England and Englishness. Collage has always been a hallmark of Blake’s work, allowing him to freely mix found objects and images of people and other artworks; screenprinting, with its use of stencils and layers, lends itself perfectly to this technique, and indeed it was Pop Art that fully realised the potential of screenprinting as a medium for complex replication. Abstract mixed media lithograph and relief by Spanish artist, Picasso friend S/N
Located in New York, NY
Antoni Clavé Untitled, from the Album International 2 Portfolio, 1977 Mixed media: Lithograph in relief 29 1/4 × 19 3/4 inches Edition 1/50 Signed and number on front Unframed This is a rare lithograph by the world renowned Catalan graphic artist, painter and sculptor, signed and numbered in pencil from the limited edition of only 50. Superb provenance as it is was acquired from the original Album International Portfolio, number 1 of 50. Text from the Colophon page reads as follows: Born in Barcelona, living in St. Tropez, France. Lithograph in relief, edition of 50, each numbered and signed by the artist. Antoni Clavé biography Antoni Clavé was born in Barcelona on April 5th, 1913. From 1926 he attended evening courses at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios "Llotja", a school both Picasso and Miró attended in their youth. In 1927, one of Clavé's teachers found him a position as a house painter's apprentice because of his growing fascination with the hands-on nature of painting and especially with the materials used for such work, like learning how to prepare paints. In 1932, Clavé stopped attending evening classes and, on the recommendation of Illescas, an architect, was employed at the firm of Cinaes, where he designed the weekly cinema posters. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), he served as a draughtsman for the Republican government but eventually was forced to flee to France. After a brief internment at Les Haras camp in Perpignan, Clavé settled in Paris in 1939 without any papers, drawing comics and working as an illustrator to get by. In the 1940s Clavé's work showed the stylistic influence of Bonnard and Vuillard, until he met fellow Spanish expatriate Pablo Picasso in 1944. This meeting marked a pivotal change in Clavé's style, and he was forever grateful to be considered a lifelong friend of Don Pablo, as he called him. From 1946, Clavé created numerous designs for the ballet and theatre in Paris, Munich, London and New York and in the 1950s, he turned to book illustration. He was nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design) for his work on the 1952 film Hans Christian Andersen. In 1954, Clavé ceased working as a stage-set designer and illustrator to devote himself entirely to painting, visiting Spain again. His paintings became more abstract and enigmatic; inspired by wall...

One Thousand Drawings By Tracey Emin (Hand signed and inscribed book for Nadine)
Located in New York, NY
Tracey Emin One Thousand Drawings By Tracey Emin (Hand signed and inscribed for Nadine), 2009 Hardback monograph with dust jacket (ink signed and inscribed by Tracey Emin) Hand signed, dated and inscribed to Nadine by Tracey Emin 7 × 10 × 2 1/2 inches This is the First Edition of the hardback monograph with dust jacket "One Thousand Drawings" by Tracey Emin - featuring reproductions of 1000 of her drawings. It was hand signed, dated and inscribed in ink to the current owner - our gallery director - at the 2011 Marc Jacobs pop up bookstore in Manhattan. (see attached article for details) Inscription reads: For Nadine Love Tracey Emin 2011 NY X Publisher's Blurb: Tracey Emin has stirred controversy as well as acclaim since she rose to fame as the most highly publicized of the infamous Young British Artists. Though denounced by conservative critics at the outset, Emin’s work has attracted serious critical attention since the early 1990s for being consistently engaging, original, and startlingly direct. Her work has succeeded over the years in many media—from films to appliqués, embroideries, and installations—but it is in her works on paper that the honesty and frankness that have come to characterize her work are most fully realized. Edited by the artist herself from an archive of work stretching back before the beginnings of her career in the late 1980s, A Thousand Drawings is at once a collection of Emin’s works on paper, an exposé of her life as an artist, and a collectible artifact in itself. Many of these works on paper shed light on well-known multimedia pieces, previously studied in Works 1963–2006, published by Rizzoli in 2006. Stripped of the distractions of form and context, her bare and enigmatic drawings are presented on bible-thin paper in a uniquely beautiful slipcased volume, with an introduction by the artist. From considered self-portraits to pen-and-ink drawings and informal studies on lined notebook paper, this remarkable collection is as much a catalogue of Emin’s preoccupations as it is a monument to her raw and evocative talents as an artist. Review “Emin-an artist who is not afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve, or, indeed too embroider it on a blanket-personally chose the pictures for this book, and the delicate sketches are at once a glimpse of the profundity she’s capable of, and a reminder of vulnerability.” ~Nylon Magazine About the Author Tracey Emin was born in London in 1963. Nominated for the Turner Prize in 1999 and chosen to represent Britain at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007, Emin is also a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. The author of several books, including Strangeland, her memoir, she contributes regularly to The Independent newspaper and lives and works in London. Inflatable Baby (in original Pop Shop Box)
Located in New York, NY
Keith Haring Inflatable Baby (in original Pop Shop Box), 1985 Inflatable Vinyl Figure Authorized artist signature on outside of box. 6 × 6 9/10 × 2 1/5 inches Unframed Keith Haring’s Pop Shops were born out of the artist’s desire to make his whimsical aesthetic accessible to the widest audience possible. “I wanted it to be a place where, yes, not only collectors could come, but also kids from the Bronx,” Haring said of the Pop Shops. The street artist opened two Pop Shops—one in Manhattan in 1986 and another in Tokyo in 1987—where art, clothes, posters, other ephemera, and drawings by peers like Jean-Michel Basquiat could be purchased at affordable prices. Haring painted floor to ceiling murals at both boutiques, creating an immersive environment for visitors to browse and enjoy his beloved art. Today, Haring enthusiasts make the pilgrimage to see the original New York Pop Shop ceiling installed in the entryway of the New York Historical Society. This Keith Haring vinyl inflatable sculpture comes with the original screen printed box. This is the piece that was originally sold at Keith Haring's Pop Shop. Although the exact edition number is unknown, there were only a limited number of works created and sold by Haring in the Pop Shop - so these pieces are considered desirable collectors' items and are quite scarce - especially in such good condition with original box. Artwork shown inflated but actually comes uninflated and new in the vintage box...
