About the Item

Frank Stella; An Illustrated Biography (Hand signed and dated by Frank Stella), 1995 Hardback monograph (hand signed and inscribed on the title page) Hand signed and dated by Frank Stella on the title page 12 1/4 × 9 1/2 × 1 inches Unframed This lavish First Edition 1995 hardback monograph is hand signed and dated by Frank Stella on the title page. Makes an excellent gift. Publisher's Blurb: A friend and colleague of Frank Stella's for forty years, Sidney Guberman presents a unique view of this seminal figure of contemporary American art. Undaunted by Stella's infamous comment "Only what can be seen there is there," Guberman traces Stella's career, exploring sources as diverse as Jasper Johns, Jean Arp, and Henri Matisse, investigating the technical complexity of the work, and interweaving more personal insights into the events of his life, his passion for sport and speed, and the role of his family and colleagues in the art world. What emerges is a portrait of a man of seemingly boundless creative energy who is perpetually challenging himself and his world. Lavishly illustrated, this volume combines handsome color reproductions of nearly one hundred of Stella's paintings and prints with a wealth of images from the artist's collection and other sources that vividly capture his spirit and interests. • Abstract Picture (Limited edition print; authorized promotional reproduction)

Gerhard Richter Untitled Abstract Picture, 2002 Offset lithograph on GardaMatt Art 250 GSM paper Not signed, edition of 3433 12 1/2 × 16 3.5 inches Unframed Printed on GardaMatt Art 250 GSM paper, this beautiful and colorful piece was part of a portfolio of loose plate reproductions for Gerhard Richter's Abstraktes works. Released during his exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Art (Abstract Pictures) and the Museum of Modern Art (Gerhard Richter, 40 Years of Painting). It depicts Richters 1999 Oil on Aluminum abstract picture) More about Gerhard Richter: Gerhard Richter was born in 1932 in Dresden, Germany. Throughout his career, Richter has negotiated the frontier between photography and painting, captivated by the way in which these two seemingly opposing practices speak to and challenge one another. From exuberant canvases rendered with a squeegee and acerbic color charts to paintings of photographic detail and close-ups of a single brushstroke, Richter moves effortlessly between the two mediums, reveling in the complexity of their relationship, while never asserting one above the other. Richter’s life traces the defining moments of twentieth-century history and his work reverberates with the trauma of National Socialism and the Holocaust. In the wake of the Second World War, Richter trained in a Socialist Realist style sanctioned by East Germany’s Communist government. When he defected to West Germany in 1961, a month before the Berlin Wall was erected, Richter left his entire artistic oeuvre up to that point behind. From 1961 to 1964—alongside Blinky Palermo and Sigmar Polke—Richter studied at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he began to explore the material, conceptual, and historical implications of painting without ideological restraint. Richter’s earliest paintings in Düsseldorf, stimulated by a fascination with current affairs and popular culture, responded to images from magazines and newspaper cuttings. Through the 1960s, Richter continued to address found and media images of subjects such as military jets, portraits, and aerial photographs. Notably, he reimagined family pictures he had smuggled from East Germany that included his smiling uncle Rudi, dressed in a Nazi uniform...

Biography: Frank Stella (1936-) is an American artist best known for his use of geometric patterns and shapes in creating both paintings and sculptures. Arguably one of the most influential living American artists, Stella’s works utilize the formal properties of shape, color, and composition to explore non-literary narratives, as seen in his work Harrar II (1967) from the Protractor series. “Abstraction didn't have to be limited to a kind of rectilinear geometry or even a simple curve geometry. It could have a geometry that had a narrative impact. In other words, you could tell a story with the shapes,” he explained. “It wouldn't be a literal story, but the shapes and the interaction of the shapes and colors would give you a narrative sense. You could have a sense of an abstract piece flowing along and being part of an action or activity.” Born on May 12, 1936 in Malden, MA, Stella went on to study history at Princeton University before moving to New York in 1958. Having moved to the city, Stella was immersed in the heyday Abstract Expressionism, but it was the work of Jasper Johns that inspired Stella’s Black...
