About the Item

Donna Green (Australian, b. 1960) is a ceramic artist living and working in New York. Drawing inspiration from a variety of sources including ancient Japanese Jomon ceramics, Chinese Han Dynasty storage jars, Gonshi (naturally occurring scholars’ rocks), and garden grottos from the baroque period – Green creates heroically scaled urns that reference classical design while transcending decorative norms. Beginning with coil-bulit stoneware forms, Green works the clay into anthropomorphic gestural shapes pushing the physical limits of the medium. Layer upon layer of glaze is applied to the undulating surfaces resulting in distorted vessels that explore the dichotomy between beauty and ugliness.
