Takashi Murakami Art

Japanese, b. 1962

Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami may be famous among collectors for the psychedelic flowers and chaotic cartoons that populate his prints and paintings, but artists likely know him as the theorist behind the contemporary art movement he calls “Superflat.”

Partially inspired by the Pop art of Andy Warhol, in which celebrity culture and mundane mass-produced items became the focus of bright and colorful works that both celebrated and criticized consumerism, Murakami’s Superflat encompasses painting, sculpture, digital design and more to present a subversive look at consumerism but is also an effort to blend fine art and lowbrow culture.

A multifaceted and remarkably influential artist as well as a compulsive art collector, Murakami has collaborated with brands such as Louis Vuitton, while one of his most famous Superflat works is the teddy bear on the cover of the Graduation album by American rapper Kanye West.

In 1993 Murakami earned his Ph.D. from Tokyo University of the Arts, where he was trained in nihonga, a style of painting that originated in the late 19th century by artists who worked to preserve and promote the conventions and processes associated with traditional Japanese art. While practicing nihonga, Murakami began to realize that his beliefs didn’t align with the tradition, so his art subsequently took on a satirical feel that embodied a critique of the movement. Before long, his style took a drastic turn, embracing otaku, a rising postwar cultural phenomenon among Japan’s younger crowd who loved anime and manga. (Otaku is also integral to Superflat.)

This is when Murakami’s most well-known character, Mr. DOB, was born. This anime-inspired icon, which Americans might interpret as a cross between Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse and Lewis Carroll’s Cheshire Cat given its pronounced ears and broad and menacing grin, was part of the artist’s endeavor to elevate the otaku subculture but also to target mass consumerism. While Murakami conceived of Mr. DOB years ahead of his 2000-era Superflat theory, there is much common ground between the two. Not unlike his other creations, Murakami’s Mr. DOB is equal parts erotic, disturbing and cartoonish — an incisive mockery of the mingling of commerce and fine art so prevalent in Japanese popular culture.

Homage to Francis Bacon (Study for Head of George Dyer, moire)
By Takashi Murakami
Located in Greenwich, CT
Homage to Francis Bacon (Study for Head of George Dyer, moiré) is an offset lithograph, 19.5 x 19.5" image size, signed and numbered lower right, and framed in a contemporary, silver-tone moulding. From the edition of 300, numbered 100/300. Framed in a white contemporary frame, image to be updated. Regarding Murakami’s longtime fascination with Francis Bacon, Murakami was struck by “the way Bacon would distort human faces in his paintings. Murakami compared the process to the way a plug-in for a computer might morph a face in a certain way in Photoshop. “I really think about how Bacon might have transformed a face, and the methodology and the form of it, and that’s how I’ve been trying to do the same kind of transformation using Bacon’s style,” he said.” (Ann Binlot, “Takashi Murakami Talks Instagram Exposure for Emerging Artists, Francis Bacon, and Virgil Abloh,” Forbes, 11 June 2018. During the 20th century, both Isabel Rawsthorne and George Dyer were close companions to the British artist Francis Bacon. Rawsthorne frequently associated with an elite milieu of artists during her generation, while Dyer entered a tumultuous relationship with Bacon and was often portrayed in the artist’s paintings. In Murakami’s Study of Isabel Rawsthorne and Study of George Dyer we find his quintessential use of the Superflat method combined with an adaptation of Western iconography. In addition to the wildly distorted faces...

Original hand signed Flower Drawing on limited edition skateboard
By Takashi Murakami
Located in New York, NY
Takashi Murakami Original hand signed Flower Drawing on limited edition skateboard, 2017 Unique Flower Drawing in Marker on skateboard. Signed by Murakami Flower drawing done in marker and boldly signed by Murakami 31 × 8 × 1/4 inches The skate deck was issued unsigned, but this one was, exceptionally hand signed with a flower drawing by Murakami at Complexcon in 2017. Note measurements of 31 x 8 inches apply to each skate deck. This limited edition Murakami skate deck was created and sold exclusively at the 2017 Complexcon convention and is already considered a collectors' item. About Takashi Murakami: We want to see the newest things. That is because we want to see the future, even if only momentarily. It is the moment in which, even if we don’t completely understand what we have glimpsed, we are nonetheless touched by it. This is what we have come to call art. —Takashi Murakami Drawing from traditional Japanese painting, sci-fi, anime, and the global art market, Takashi Murakami creates paintings, sculptures, and films populated by repeated motifs and mutating characters of his own creation. His wide-ranging work embodies an intersection of pop culture, history, and fine art. Murakami earned a BA, MFA, and PhD from Tokyo University of the Arts, where he studied nihonga (traditional Japanese painting). In 1996 he established the Hiropon Factory, a studio/workshop that in subsequent years grew into an art production and artist management company, now known as Kaikai Kiki Co. Ltd. Since the early 1990s Murakami has invented characters that combine aspects of popular cartoons from Japan, Europe, and the US—from his first Mr. DOB, who sometimes serves as a stand-in for the artist himself, to various anime characters and smiling flowers, bears, and lions. These figures act as icons and symbols—hosts for more complex themes of violence, technology, and fantasy. In 2000 Murakami curated Superflat, an exhibition featuring works by artists whose techniques and mediums synthesize various aspects of Japanese visual culture, from ukiyo-e (woodblock prints of the Edo period) to anime and kawaii (a particular cuteness in cartoons, handwriting, products, and more). With this exhibition, Murakami advanced his Superflat theory of art, which highlights the “flatness” of Japanese visual culture from traditional painting to contemporary subcultures in the context of World War II and its aftermath. Murakami’s work extends to mass-produced items such as toys, key chains, and t-shirts. In 2002 he began a multiyear collaboration with Marc Jacobs on the redesign of the Louis Vuitton monogram. Murakami then took the radical step of directly incorporating the Vuitton monograms and patterns into his paintings and sculptures. While Murakami’s imagery may appear to present unprecedented characters and forms, many contain explicit art historical references, and some are even direct contemporary updates on traditional Japanese works. In 2009 Murakami and the esteemed art historian Nobuo Tsuji began a creative dialogue centered on a group of Japanese artists known as the Edo eccentrics. This collaboration led to an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 2017, for which Murakami and Tsuji selected Japanese works from the museum’s collection and showed them alongside works by Murakami. The latter included Dragon in Clouds—Red Mutation: The version I painted myself in annoyance after Professor Nobuo Tsuji told me, “Why don’t you paint something yourself for once?” (2010), a red monochrome version of the famous eighteenth-century painting Dragon and Clouds by Soga Shōhaku...

Bokan - camouflage pink. Limited Edition (print) by Takashi Murakami, signed
By Takashi Murakami
Located in Hong Kong, HK
Bokan - camouflage pink, 2009 by Takashi Murakami Offset print, numbered and signed by the artist 19 11/16 × 19 11/16 in 50 × 50 cm Edition 71/300 About the Artist: Takashi Murakami is best known for his contemporary combination of fine art and pop culture. He uses recognizable iconography like Doraemon and cartoonish flowers and infuses it with Japanese culture. The result is a colorful body of work that takes the shape of paintings, sculptures and animations. In the 1990s, Murakami founded the Superflat movement in an attempt to expose the "shallow emptiness of Japanese consumeristic culture." The artist plays on the familiar aesthetic of mangas, Japanese-language comics, to render works that appear popular and accessible, all the while denouncing the universality and impersonality of consumer goods. Murakami has done collaborations with numerous brands and celebrities including Kanye West, Louis Vuitton...

Takashi Murakami Skateboard Decks set of 2 (Murakami Flowers)
By Takashi Murakami
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Takashi Murakami Flowers Skateboard Decks (set of 2 works): The black & white deck marks a collaboration between Takashi Murakami and his friend, the rising Japanese artist 'Madsaki' (bio below). The impression is an urban twist on Takashi Murakami’s otherwise highly polished flowers motif - a beautiful juxtaposition between two very different styles from two masters of their craft. This limited work was published by Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki Gallery Japan in 2017. The blue was published circa 2017 in conjunction with the Murakami exhibit: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg, MCA Chicago. A brilliant set that makes for vibrant, one of a kind wall-art that hangs with ease. Medium: Silkscreen on 2 individual Maple Wood skateboard decks. Crisp colors. Dimensions: 8.0 x 31 inches (20.5 x 79 cm) Condition: each housed in its original packaging; excellent overall condition. Each from a sold out limited edition of unknown; stamped by the artist on the reverse of each. Perhaps Murakami's most iconic motif, these candy-colored, smiling flowers came into the artist's work when he was preparing for his entrance exams for the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts, and he embraced the form over nine years teaching prep-school students to draw flowers. One of the most acclaimed artists to emerge from postwar Asia, Takashi Murakami—“the Warhol of Japan”—is known for his contemporary Pop synthesis of fine art and popular culture, particularly his use of a boldly graphic and colorful anime and manga cartoon style. MADSAKI (b. Japan 1974) Joining Murakami has led to a rapid evolution of Madsaki. Now with three Kaikai exhibitions under his belt––Hickory Dickory Dock; Here Today, Gone Tomorrow; and MADSAKI Says “Yo! snipe1 & UFO907, Get Your Asses Over Here!” Madsaki has made a firm imprint on the Murakami canon. In his introduction to Madsaki’s second solo exhibit, Here Today, Gone Tomorrow from 2017, Murakami jokingly points out how his direction and guidance successfully shaped Madsaki’s work. While the debt Madsaki owes to Murakami is patently clear, in an abrupt turnabout it appears that the apprentice guides the master in some ways as well...

Takashi Murakami has used a variety of materials in his work, and his characters have appeared across a wide range of media. His sculptures include silkscreened maple hardwood skateboard decks and cast vinyl figurines (polyvinyl chloride), and he has created silkscreen prints, ink drawings with permanent marker, and offset color lithographs on wove paper. Murakami is a filmmaker, too, and has produced paintings in oil and acrylics. The artist is supported by a large production studio and artist management company that he founded called Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd.

The type of paint that Takashi Murakami uses is acrylic paint. This is a departure from the traditions of Nihonga painting that inform the artist's work. Typically, painters working in this style use natural pigments, but by opting for a mix of acrylic paint and digital media, Murakami gives his works a contemporary Pop art sheen.
