Chinese Altar Table with Rare Silver Wire Inlays
About the Item
A Chinese wood altar table or console table circa late 19th to early 20th century (late Qing dynasty to the Republic era). The table was constructed with mixed wood types. The legs and fret-apron surround are of a reddish Mohagany type wood (Hongmu), nicely caved in the shape of bamboo stalks. The tabletop was made from two joined wood planks of a likely Huali type wood with expressive grains (possibly HongSuanZhi, note the seam in the center). It is hard to know whether the top was recycled from older pieces as the reincorporation of desirable wood elements was not uncommon historically. What is most striking and unusual about this table is that the top showcases elaborate silver wire inlays on four corners and also in the mid-sections. The thin silver ware in single strand was used to create intricate motifs. On the corner, a big bundle of wheat centers the design, surrounded by flowers, corns and grapes. The center features squash and vines. All symbols of good harvest and planting.
It is quite possible that the silver inlays were not original with the table but added later during 20th century.
The table belonged to an early CIA operator in China and a founding member of CAT and was likely bought in China around 1930-40s.
