Heavy, Japanese bronze temple bell 梵鐘 (bonshô) of traditional shape

About the Item

Heavy bronze temple bell (bonshô) of traditional shape with an appealing echoing sound when struck. Its surface is a rich brown, complemented by a hint of light green aged patina. At the top, the handle (ryûzu) is crafted in the form of two mirrored dragon heads. Around the upper portion of the bell, the pronounced bosses 乳 (chi) are arranged in three rows of four. Surrounded by embossed cartouches with a flower-shaped striking panel (tsuki’za). One of the cartouches with a dated inscription by the commissioner(s). Dated: ‘December, Shôwa 21’, Anno 1946. It also includes a reference to the location for which the bell was specifically commissioned: ‘Shiroyama dôjô’. Weight 52.91 lb/24 kg. The beautiful patina and some colour-variations are a sign that this bell has actually hung outside the temple for quite some time (and thus has been used functionally). When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity. Price including insured shipping.
