Monumental Burmese Ava Style Marble Head of the Buddha, 17th Century
About the Item
A large carved, lacquered and gilt Ava style marble head of the Buddha, Burma (now Myanmar), 17th century.
Originally part of what must have been a monumental Buddha sculpture, this carved marble head displays the finest qualities of the Ava style. His face is exemplary, featuring high arched brows and downcast almond shaped eyes over a long, wide nose and soft, full lips pursed into a sweet and knowing smile.
The Buddha gazes serenely downwards, his cherubic face neatly framed by long pendulous earlobes (a reminder of his princely past), and a head of hair arranged in neat snail curls covering a pronounced ushnisha and topped with large flame finial rising from a lotus base.
His face has been completely gilt over a layer of red lacquer which peeks through in some places, giving the illusion that the Buddha is blushing. The ears, hair, and flame finial covered in a black lacquer.
Mounted on a black wood and metal stand.
