Late 19th Century Japanese Carved Hardwood Okimono of a Man, circa 1890
Located in Central England, GB
Late 19th C Japanese carved hardwood okimono of a man, circa 1890
This top quality and most impressive large scale Japanese carved hardwood okimono superbly depicts a characterful study of a delightfully crafty looking man. He is dressed simply in a robe. On his back, he has a rolled woven mat for resting and a turtle shell sun hat hangs below. On his side hanging from his waist sash, there is a simple hand fan made from woven palm leaves and around his neck, he is wearing a string of very large beads. This unfortunate character is on a journey and he seems to have lost or broken one sandal. His foot is sore and he is resting it on his gnarly walking stick. He has one arm outstretched and is holding out a large piece of fresh fruit as an offering perhaps to barter for new sandals...

Meiji Period Bronze Sculpture of a Mother and Son by Atsuyoshi
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
A Meiji period bronze sculpture of a mother and son by Atsuyoshi, she is shown seated on a gnarled rootwood base, with her arm round a crying boy standing by her knee and offering her breast, wearing a short robe, trousers and a cloth incised with Mount Fuji around her head, and bare feet. Signed Atsuyoshi saku, Maruki Shachu seisaku (??????????? (??????????). Japanese, circa 1880.
Footnote: Atsuyoshi is known for a number of finely modelled bronze studies of both wild and domesticated animals, almost all of them made for the Tokyo based Maruki Company. This is therefore an unusual subject matter for him and Japanese bronzes in general , however Oliver Impey and Joyce Seaman, in ‘Japanese Decorative Arts of the Meiji Period’ (in the Ashmolean Museum Collections), pp. 68-69, include a bronze group of a woman who has just finished breast feeding...

Japanese Gilt Seated Kannon Figure, circa 1850
Located in Chicago, IL
Intricately carved and finished with gilt black lacquer, this seated figure depicts the bodhisattva Guanyin, known in Japanese Buddhism as Kannon. Described as the "Buddha of Infinite Compassion," Kannon is the embodiment of mercy and makes himself available to all who call upon him with all their mind.
Kannon is depicted here seated in diamond position upon a double lotus plinth, set above a stepped base. He is dressed in gracefully draped robes and wears a tall crown bearing a minuscule figure of Amida, the Buddha of Infinite Light. He has a serene expression of calm and holds his right hand in the abhaya mudra, a gesture of comfort, blessing, and protection. Backed by a magnificent leaf-form nimbus, this Kannon figure...

Japanese Wooden Buddhist Sculpture of Amida Nyorai, 16th Century
Located in Milano, IT
The Amitabha (Amida in Japanese) Buddha is shown standing with his hands forming the Amida raigo-in mudra. The face has a serene expression, with closed eyes under delicately arched brows and a severe face. The hair is arranged in rows of coils that also cover the "ushnisha", the protuberance on the head. The drapery is folded in elegant pleats falling from the shoulders to the feet. The antique sculpture is placed on a lotus flower which is located on a richly decorated base.
Faith in Amida Buddha remained largely confined to a small segment of the Japanese population until the Kamakura Era (1185-1333) when it was popularized by new Pure Land sects committed to bringing Buddhism to the illiterate commoner. These sects expressed concern for the salvation of the ordinary person and stressed pure and simple faith over complicated rites and doctrines. Amida Nyorai...
