Mid-Century Modern 1960s Burmese Ice Bucket by DesignerJames Mont in Faux Bronze

About the Item

A mid-century modern design icon: the desirable ice bucket by American designer James Mont made in the 1960s. Due to its ethnic design and elaborate, exotic relief pattern, this model is often referred to as his Burmese ice bucket. The bucket is made in metal, in a faux bronze style, with a verdigris finish. This Asian inspired, over-the-top design was right on spot with the Hollywood Regency fashion at the time. As opposed to other samples "in-the-style-of" this bucket has a silver-metal insulation insert for storing the ice. The rim and the interior of the cover are made of green plastic. It has no stamps or markings on its' base (see photos). James Mont was one of the most dazzling and notorious figures in twentieth century American design world. He was born in Istanbul in 1904 immigrated to the US in the 1920s. He was noticed by a mob member named Frankie Yales when working at a Brooklyn electrical retailer, selling and designing lamps. He soon became the go-to interior designer of both the New York underworld and of Hollywood royalty. Mont’s designs set him apart as a singular figure among the other American midcentury designers. His work displays a heavy reliance on the chinoiserie style so popular in European design of the previous century. Today Mont’s luscious colors, monumental scale, and bespoke shape and quality still intrigue interior designers and design lovers around the world. In excellent vintage condition. No flaws, no repairs. Very minor signs of wear. The silver-metal insert has no scratches. Ready to be used. Dimension: height 30 cm/ 11 3/4", diameter 26.5 cm/ 10 1/4". Weight: 3416 g/ 7.53 lbs
