"African Dancer, " Brilliant Art Deco Vanity Tray Inspired by Josephine Baker
About the Item
Brilliantly glazed in tones of coral, jet black, plum and moss, this very rare vanity tray depicts a female African figure with a feathered headdress and garlands of flowers, in a tropical setting framed by palm trees and luxuriant foliage. No doubt inspired by the performances of Josephine Baker on the Parisian stage, this exotic scene is a rare motif for French Art Deco ceramic pieces. The tray was created by Longwy -- the venerable ceramics firm established at the end of the 18th century in Alsace near the Belgian border -- for Le Bon Marché department store. Several of the largest retailers in Paris commissioned ceramic and porcelain pieces from Longwy and other firms, including Le Bon Marché and Printemps.
