Christopher Dresser Old Hall Aesthetic Vases c.1885

About the Item

Paire of Japanese style Old Hall Earthenware vases decorated with gilt elephants. Design attributed to Christopher Dresser (a similar model in C.W Dresser People's Designer 1834-1904, H. Lyons & C. Morley 1999, catalog No. C-188) with colorful crane birds, lovely plants, flowers and a lovely pattern of a fan with an Asiatic-inspired figure with a cherry tree in it. The whole ensemble is on a beige background with a fine network of crazing to the glaze of the vase that is often found on Old Hall earthenware vases. Numbered under the base of each vase and blue marks. Gilt elephants, typical of the aesthetic movement production and also a pattern often used by Christopher Dresser.

Wonderful aesthetic movement tea cup in hand-painted and hand-gilt porcelain by the English manufactory Minton. Blue background with stylized red flowers imitating the cloisonné technique, very common in the Japonisme ware. Attributed to Christopher Dresser, a famous designer that was working for Minton in 1867. He made very decorative designs, using very often this special shade of blue.
