What are magots?
The word magot comes from the French: barbary ape. They are male or female figures with oriental features. Usually the material used for the representation was painted or decorated porcelain. The subject depicted, in a good-natured and pleasant way, is Pu-Tai. The Chinese god of happiness and abundance.
It is said that they brought good luck because, thanks to their head, tongue and jointed hands, they were able to warn earthquakes.
They arrived in Europe between the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth century thanks to the first connections between European merchants (Venetian in particular) and Chinese. In the following decades, they became a status symbol to be displayed in aristocratic homes. They found fertile ground in Europe thanks to the fashion for the exotic that developed in the Old Continent during the first decades of the eighteenth century. This fashion can be found in various objects of the time, not only in the Magot, see the toilet objects and lacquered furnishings decorated with the famous chinoiseries.
In a few years, thanks to the increased demand, our factories also began working to satisfy this new form of collecting.
From the German ones: Meissen, Dresden, Rudolstadt; to the French ones: Saint Claude Samson and Chantilly, to the Italian ones.
True masterpieces were created throughout Northern Italy. The Piedmontese ones, made of papier-mâché, were then unusual.

The Samuel Alcock factory was operative in Staffordshire between 1822 and 1856, after which it was bought by Sir James Duke and Nephews. The factory started as a partnership between the young Samuel Alcock and the older Ralph Stevenson, who provided the factory and capital. Complete set of eight porcelain coasters produced in 1970 by Piero Fornasetti; they were expressly commissioned by the Banca Unione of Milan; the graphics with the decoration "Le Monete" represents eight variations on the theme of coins made in black and pure gold with the third firing; the term "third firing" means, in ceramics, the third firing that is applied to an object to add decorations, especially those in pure gold, a technique that requires great skill and precision; the saucers represent in numerical order 1)Boat, 2)Home, 3)idea, 4)Everything, 5)Holidays, 6)Christmas, 7)Student, 8)Car; they are contained in a golden cardboard case. These are Fine collectibles in excellent condition; the saucers were created in 1970 to be given as gifts by Banca Unione of Milan to its customers; they were made by Piero Fornasetti (1931-1988) a versatile and eclectic founder of the design and decorative arts atelier that bears his name. The Banca Unione was established in 1919 by Carlo Feltrinelli, father of Giangiacomo, a publisher very close to the left; among the minority shareholders were Bastogi (the largest Italian financial); since 1968 the bank became the property of the financier and fixer Michele Sindona (1920-1986) who secured the absolute majority along with the Vatican; the Bank dedicated itself to the Italian market by launching an unprecedented commercial policy, in an attempt to reconcile the interests of the institution with socially advanced actions. According to Sindona, in Italy, banks were only interested in the wealthy, snubbing the categories of workers with modest incomes. Sindona overturned this logic and, ahead of his time, sent Banca Unione promoters into the factories. Sindona was a member of the P2 lodge (card no. 0501) and had clear associations with Cosa Nostra and the Gambino family in the United States. Pair of Neoclassical Paris Porcelain Vases in Royal French Blue, Early 1800s

This pair of Paris porcelain neoclassical style vases from the early 1800s have stunning details and rich coloration.
Old Paris porcelain, or Vieux Paris, is the term given to the elaborate hard-paste porcelain products created in Paris from the mid-1700s through the late 1800s. Vieux Paris is a generic term, as there were more than 30 factories that produced porcelain during this period. Sometimes these factories would sell “blank”, unpainted pieces to outside artisans, so it is quite possible to see identically shaped pieces with different paint styles. Because of this, a fair majority of Vieux Paris is unattributed – meaning there are typically no production marks.
The trumpet necks of these vases are a lustrous gilded porcelain, flanked on two sides by bright white stylized sphinx busts with acanthus leaf headpieces. The slightly obovate bodies are painted in a matte azure color. This color, known as “Bleu de France”, has been a staple of the heraldry of the French monarchy since the 12th century.
The body of each vase is where most of the minute details can be found. Situated on either side and slightly below the base of the sphinxes are gilt cherubs. Each vase has its own unique set of cherubs, depicting different activities. One vase has a cherub with butterfly on a string, while the one on the opposite side is holding a pair of trumpets. The other vase has a cherub flying with a wreath, while the one on the opposite side is holding a pair of torches.
