Vintage Greta Magnusson Grossman Grasshopper Lamp for Ralph O. Smith Sweden 1947

About the Item

This is an extraordinarily well-preserved grasshopper floor lamp designed by Greta Magnusson Grossman and produced by Ralph O. Smith circa 1947. The steel base and spun aluminum cone still retain their original bright red finish. One of the best examples we have ever had in the gallery. We also have a clean, labeled, pair of Cobra lamps available separately.

    An award-winning 1948 design by Swedish-American Greta Grossman for Ralph O. Smith, a California-based lighting company. The lamp, colloquially known as the “Cobra” for its uniquely shaped shade that resembles a cobra’s hood, is counterweighted with a segmented arm curving upward from a round base. The oblong shade slants gently from the arm to its outer edge. Light is controlled by a push button on/off switch on base. Retains the original Good Design label inside the shade.
