Mathieu Matégot Java Magazine Holder 1950s

About the Item

Portes-revues "Java" - Magazine holder by Mathieu Matégot folded steel Original white paint, Edition Les Ateliers Matégot circa 1955 Ex-collection Pierre Bergé Like a couturier working in tune with his collections, Mathieu Matégot designed a whole host of "Java" objects connectedwith everyday life : trays, magazine racks, small occasional tables, flowerpot holders, umbrella stands, all part of a series produced in black, white and yellow. During Matégot's heyday, from 1953 to 1959, original works came thick and fast, alternating with a variety of techniques and a mix of materials. "Rigitulle", which became "Rigiband", a flexible metal sheet worked in large parallel strips covered with large perforations ("Santiago" series). The steel sheet, pierced (or not) with holes large and small was folded and bent, like a textile ("Java" series). The solid metal sheet was crinkled, as for a fabric ("Soumba" models). Iron was combined with rattan, usually natural ("Ferotin" series). In addition to metal, use was frequently made of glass, wood, plastic, coated fabric, ceramics (in association with Georges Jouve), formica, then brass, leather and imitation leather, and even pony hide ("Horse- Guard" series) in his last productions in the 1960s. Matégot is quoted as saying: "In the end of the day, if some of my models were copied now and then, the fact remains that my technique was very personal" Source: Philippe Jousse and Caroline Mondieu, Mathieu Matégot, Paris, 2003 for a similar example to this Magazine holder see no. 151 in the photographic archive.
