Alessandro Mendini Original Proust Armchair, Italy

About the Item

Historical piece of contemporary design, the Proust armchair with carved and hand painted wooden frame, fixed multicolored fabric hand- painted lining that resembles the decoration of the structure. Designed by Alessandro Mendini. With the original signature of the artist. Biography Alessandro Mendini was born in Milan in 1931. After a long experience with Nizzoli Associati, in 1970 he left his activity to apply himself to art criticism and research. He directed the magazine “Casabella”, the official paper of Italian radical architecture in that period. In 1976 he left “Casabella” to found the magazine “Modo”, which he directed until 1979, when he took the direction of Domus, which he continued until 1985. He is considered with Ettore Sottsass jr. and Andrea Branzi the main theorician and supporter of the renewal of the Italian design of the 1980s, known as “Nuovo Design” or “neo-modernism”. In the mid-1980s he created the new image for the Italian company Alessi and resumed the activity of architect, by working with paintings and sculptures, too. He promoted “Global Tools”, the Libera Scuola (Free School) for individual creativity. As a member of the associated study Alchimia, he is a consultant for several companies as far as image and design matters are concerned. Besides working at the production of art and furniture, he has taken active part in exhibitions, seminars and university teaching in Italy and abroad. He has written several books about design matters (Paesaggio casalingo, Architettura addio, Il Progetto infelice) and he is a member of the Domus Academy scientific committee. He has been contributing to the main international art magazines with articles and reviews.

“I think many people will already know my “Proust armchair”. It is a romantic, baroque chair, on which an endless number of multi-coloured dots are hand-paint- ed using the pointillism technique. These dots cover the whole armchair, both the fabric and the wooden decorations. It’ s a re-design work. It is, in fact, a combination of a mock-antique armchair with a detail from a painting of a garden by French artist Signac. From 1978 onwards, the “Proust armchair” was produced in many versions, using different colours, ma- terials and dimensions, and was even made of ceramics and bronze. It travelled all around the world and was hosted in many museums. But now some truly revolutionary news, as a paradox comes true: the “Proust armchair” has now been transformed into an industrial rotational-moulded piece. Ladies and gentlemen, we bring you “ Magis Proust...
