About the Item
A stunning pair of antique Maison Jansen Style Louis XVI painted fauteuil chairs with down cushions and old upholstery tacks. Very rare to find a matching pair of this age. The layered painted surface in shades of cream, olive green and black on the wood frames adds such character to this 100+ year old set. Clearly in need of re-upholstery but the down cushions could be recovered. The wood frames themselves are strong and comfortable to sit in. Stamped FRANCE on the underside of the chair frame.
From the collection of a Boulder, Colorado interior designer who collected many antique pieces from France. Collector purchased this pair of fauteuil chairs at the annual Chicago Antiques & Art Show in the 1990s.
Condition commensurate with age and use. The painted surface shows 100+ years of wear with stable surface crazing but no flaking. Re-upholstery is needed. Surface crack on the back of each chair, see last two photos. Chair frames are strong and comfortable to sit in. A very slight wiggle in the frames but joints are not loose. Circular medallion on the end of the armrest, where your hand would sit, is missing on all but one chair, see video.
