Broadway chair designed by Gaetano Pesce for Bernini, 1993

About the Item

broadway chair, designed in 1993 by Gaetano Pesce Manufactured by Bernini, Italy Gaetano Pesce has been a visionary designer, his quest was his interest in non-rational ways of designing furniture and his explorative use with new materials, that he used for his furniture designs. He was amongst the earliest designers and architects that made use of the innovative amd new materials invented in the post-war era. It was poly-urethan foam and later also Epoxy resin that allowed best to materialize Gaetano Pesce‘s playful and artistic attitude towards the creation of furniture and even in architecture. These materials and newly invented manufacturing processes in parallel allowed the style of furniture he created. His attitude could be discribred as one of a „Rebell“ who was very well aware of manufacturing inventions of his time. Already during his architecture studies at the university in Venice, he doubted the then leading modernist and very representative approach in design. It was in 1964 when Gaetano Pesce met with Cesare Cassina, the CEO and founder of the prominent Cassina furniture. Cassina saw his potential in exploring these new technologies and supported Gaetano Pesce to further research on the new materials and their use in furniture design. One of the continuous ideals of Gaetano. Peace remained his idea of „mass-produced originals“. Every single of the manufactured items was different, for example in terms of the coloration of his epoxy resin pieces. There was no second item that could have exactly the same floating color-pattern. In this point his designs were always unique in a certain sense. Albeit his furniture designs always were highly sensual and tactile coloring these material components. In the 1970‘s he had his first exhibitions and his ideas clearly can be discribed as radical and avant-garde. Which led to an invitation to join the famous exhibition „the new domestic landscape“ in 1972 in New York at the Museum of Modern Art. His works were shown amongst the work of his most influential contemporary colleagues and friends. Gaetano Pesce continued his „mass-produced originals“ working with the italian company ‚zerodisegno‘ to create some of his most accessible but still unconventional designs, in 1993 his Broadway chair series made by Bernini was introduced into the market. Gaetano Pesce had always remained one of the most-influential designers and architects throughout his career. He passed away in 2024 leaving behind his broad and unique legacy. chair signed with manufacturer’s mark. Length 55 cm × Depth 42 × Height 75 cm. in very good vintage condition, shows signs of use.
