"Vigilius" Sofa Designed by Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez for Driade

About the Item

"Vigilius" is an elegant sofa, designed by Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez and manufactured by Driade, with ebonized beechwood legs and polyurethane foams padded wooden structure with fabric or leather fixed cover. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 32.6", W. 48.4", H. 30.1", Seat H. 15.7" Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez are well known for their aplomb in treating furniture like a global decorative topic. Their pieces evoke a sedimented “living culture” rooted in middle-class comfort and hospitality. S.Marco chair, Meran armchair and Vigilius collection mirror the charming image of those spaces, once called “fumoir”. MATTEO THUN, architect and designer, born in Bolzano (1952), studied at the Academy of Salzburg with Oskar Kokoschka and at the University of Florence. After he met Ettore Sottsass, Matteo Thun becomes co-founder of the Memphis group in Milan and partner of Sottsass Associati from 1980 to 1984. From 1983 to 2000 he taught design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna (Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst, Wien). From 1990 to 1993 he became art director for Swatch. In 1984 he opened his own office in Milan. He was awarded three times the prestigious Compasso d’Oro prize. ANTONIO RODRIGUEZ, born in 1963 in Spain, completed his studies in Valencia and Milan. In 1989 in Valencia he established Estudio A6, dealing with product design. In 1993 he moved to Milan, where he collaborated with con Taipei Design Center, Studio Matsunaga and Ugolini Design. From 2000 to 2005 he has taught at Istituto Europeo di Design di Milano. Since 2003 he's in charge of product design as an associate of Matteo Thun & Partners Studio. Matteo Thun’s design is based on the Zero Design philosophy and on a holistic approach: buildings need interiors, interiors need products, products need designers, manufacturers and users. A design revealing less weight and more light; pure form and function. The formal simplification and the employment of warm and natural materials characterize the creative approach of Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez’ product design. The thorough study of materials, technologies, market and of the commission, in order to combine essential aesthetics and immediate functionality, are at heart of each single project. The aim of the innovative elements of Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez’ design is to influence the evolution of everyday gestures.
